There are many Second hand car dealers that are very reputable, Rays Autodealer, Mibrum etc. Also take a look on Maltapark, ensure that you also ask the seller for copy of their ID.

If you buying private you will have to go with the Seller to Transport Malta to register the car in your name.  He will have to ensure all debts (parking and speed fines) are paid on the car.

We used Buhagiar Motors in Zabbar and are very happy with the car we bought. They helped with the paper work - VRT, licence, insurance etc. Painless.

Thanks for your replies . I have been enquiring through internet for the prices of auto dealers, and it seems they don't sell anything under 5000 €, even if it is a 03' Nissan Micra. I think we'll finally end up dealing with a private person. About this, what is the cost of changing the owner's name? it seems it is nearly free here in Malta, in Spain it was quite expensive.

Also, somebody has heard of Balay Auto Dealers in Paola? they seem to deal with lower end cars.

To transfer your vehicle

Logbook signed by seller, buyer and witness
Insurance in the name of the buyer
Photo copy of the ID’s of the 3 parties (not needed if transfer is made on VEH 50)
If licence is due to be renewed before always check whether the vrt is due ()
Any contraventions, CVA and any other fees due must be paid before the transfer is effect.

You must come at the Land Transport Directorate in Hall B between 7.30 am and 12.00 pm (Monday to Friday) to effect such transaction.

The buyer and seller together with a witness must sign and fill the back part of the Vehicle Registration Certificate. The buyer must also produce an insurance certificate commencing from the date of transfer and if the road licence is expired a valid VRT has to be submitted. (If Applicable)

The buyer and seller may opt to fill in application form VEH 50 instead of signing on the vehicle registration certificate.  In this case, the copies of the Identity cards will not be needed for the transfer of ownership.  The application form VEH 50 shall be signed by the seller, buyer and a witness to signatures.  The witness to signature will be signing and certifying/confirming that the signatures of both the buyer and seller took place by the buyer and seller respectively in the witness’s presence.
