Taxation in Malta

Just a 'quickie'? Is a married couple taxed as a couple or can they elect for individual status for tax?
Earned income can choose, unearned income have to do joint

Does that include pensions please George?

When you fill in the tax form there is a choice when calculating for either single or combined , you can choose the best option.

agree

my accountant told me if your income is unearned, then cannot choose single computation. don't know if pension is considered earned or unearned.
I fill in my own tax form and enter money remitted to Malta, which in our case is pension. I don't believe that the tax form asks about earned or unearned income.

From Tax Office Malta:

See Page 3, income for separate evaluation is permitted but only applied to earnings from employment, trade or pension. It also states that individual assessment is permitted.
just to say I met with John Huber who is both charming and helpful. Tis probably best to stop tinkering in my own tax affairs and leave it all to the pro's.
