Malta - Road tax on foreign registered car

hmorocz

Hello,

1. Are you required to pay a road tax (circulation fee) on foreign registered cars?

Planning to visit Malta with my car for ~ 6 months and would not like to register it there, but could not find anything about the road tax.

2. From what I've read, you have to be a non-resident in order to keep your car foreign registered up to 6 months, but if you stay for more than 3 months you automatically become a resident,

Should I leave after 3 months and come back, to avoid complications? Otherwise do I automatically receive and eId or how can an officer verify if I'm a resident or not?

Thanks,
Hunor

Depending on where in Malta you will be staying it may be easier not to bring your car as there are so many cars on the island and parking can be a problem.

As far as I am aware, you may bring your car for the three months you are here as a tourist and then apply to extend your holiday for a further 3 months. That way you don't have to register your car and your home country road tax will suffice.
Expect to be stopped frequently though as foreign registered cars are a magnet for officialdom!

There are TM people at the ferry on/off point recording the comings and goings, they've plugged the leak on the quick-trip-to-europe work around long ago.

I don’t think you can purchase a car unless you have a residence card.
