Welcome,

To work in the Netherlands as an American citizen, they will need a valid residence permit. There are different cases in which you may be eligible for a residence permit. If you want to find out whether you pass these qualifications, you can check out the . You haven't said what line of work they are in?

Do they speak Dutch, the local language?

The expat.com Netherlands Guide was recently updated.

Might be helpful to your relative to take the time to read through it.

Feel free to post any further questions you/he might have.

American citizens don't automatically have the right to work in the Netherlands 鈥 they'll need a residence permit tied to a legal basis. For someone with a background in customer service but aiming for work in music production, the most realistic starting points tend to be the Highly Skilled Migrant route (if an employer sponsors them), the Orientation Year visa for recent graduates, or the DAFT treaty if they have a concrete business plan for self-employment. The Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) website has an online tool to check which permits they may qualify for 鈥 it's worth running their situation through that before paying for a consultation, as a good consultant will often point to the same government process anyway.
