I have said this a lot lately, and will say it again: It is very difficult to get a job in Norway if you are a foreigner. The government says there are lots of jobs in Norway, but foreigners have a hard time getting them - even if you have a good education, it will be very difficult. (It will be even more difficult if you don't speak Norwegian or another Scandinavian language).

And while you are trying to find a job it will be almost impossible to live here because it is so expensive. It is best to move to Norway only if you already have been offered a job.

I would try Canada or the U.S. They are at least more "open" countries that invite foreigners to work there. Toronto is a very good city to live in.

It doesn't matter how much experience you have, if you are not Norwegian you will have a very hard time getting a job in Norway. The newspaper Aftenposten has been doing stories on the fact that immigrants do not even get interviews even though they have more qualifications than the Norwegians who apply. I think it would be better for you to spend your time looking for jobs in another country. Don't waste your time learning Norwegian -- even if you speak the language it will be very difficult to get a job because Norwegians do not like to hire foreigners.

dear friend, I am sure you would have had some challenging experiences there in Norway. Have you yet landed a job there? given that am already into the visa proces I really cannot afford to be cynical and drop all efforts
I really need to take my chances. I dont really think the government will not grant a visa without having a clue of the current labor market there. the approved job seeker visa ideally wouldnt have come if they had not see ANY possibility for the aspirant. I really appreciate your offer to educate new entrants however it may pay not to be wholly cynical and take a chance!

I am sorry you think I am being cynical. I am only trying to help people because I feel very sorry for the hundreds who have been given visas and move here thinking they can find work and have enough money to live. The newspapers are full of stories about people who come here looking for jobs -- people with masters degrees and work experience even -- and they spend all of their money and many cannot even afford to go back to their own country. Over 300 immigrants have gone to the shelter in Bergen alone because they are living on the street! They have work visas, yet they cannot find work and it is very, very expensive to live in Norway.

I am telling people this because most foreigners do not read Norwegian and therefore do not know what is being said right now in the newspapers about the job situation for immigrants in Norway. Everyone here knows this is the case, but no one is saying it outside of Norway. A recent article talked about how Spaniards felt "tricked" -- they were told that there were jobs available in Norway and they come here and find out what it is really like.

The government does not care if people come here to look for work -- why would they? Sure, there are jobs available, but the government cannot force people to hire foreigners.

Just be wise - don't come here unless you have a job first, or come here for one or two weeks and see what it is like first.

I would agree with MamaPanda to a certain extend, Norway is not a paradise where everybody can find a job. Lots of things work through networking and most job offers are filled with people who are known to the person hiring rather than by total srangers.

As stated also somewhere on the forum, it's a very expensive country to live in and I would also recommend to get a job before moving here.

Yes - this is exactly right. I have watched this happen again and again. Norway is not a very open country. I do not think people are racist, but they feel comfortable with what they know - they would rather hire a Scandinavian because they know that person will have a similar culture; they know what to expect of that person as an employee.

On top of that, it is very difficult to fire people in Norway because of employee protection laws, so many places will only hire people they know, or people who have come to them through a personal network. It takes a very long time to build that kind of network and most people cannot afford to live in Norway while they are trying to do that.

I am speaking from experience: both my own and that of my friends.

the thing is I am already in the visa process and commited some money hence practically it wont be possible to back out completely
but I do get your point in getting a job first and then relocating. makes complete sense
given am still 3 months from the visa would you be able to throw some light on a succesful road map/ strategy to follow

Somraj, did you say you worked at HSBC? Ask the places you have worked if they have any connections in Scandinavia. Maybe a partner bank? As AuNordDuMonde suggested, it is easiest if you can rely on connections.

The best places to look for jobs in Norway are and -- all the major companies place their ads there.

As I said before, I wouldn't waste too much time trying to learn Norwegian. I tried the year before I came and had to relearn almost everything. There are so many different dialects, and I think it's easiest to learn when you actually live in a place.

will sound them off although here we dont get opportunity to get direct postings unless you apply independently. once I get my visa (if at all) then I may use that as a possible entry incentive for the employers. yes you are right - it makes sense to network with partner banks and build contacts

Hi, Bergen has lots and lots of travelers every summer who come to see the fjords and hike the mountains, so hotels are a big business here. But, as I have advised everyone, you should definitely get a job BEFORE you come, because jobs are not easy to get in Norway, especially for foreigners, and it is impossible to live here without a job (living in Norway is so expensive it is not a good idea to live here WHILE you are looking for a job).

Dear somraj, i agree with MAMAPANDA , the basic strategy of european countries at present is generate economy as well they much tricky fellows, and they love thier culture, country,n people much. since u hav'nt travelled yet to europe its difficult to understand european people psychology. am here in France since 5 yr, its hard to get an employer to sponser visa. same situation like norway, they know indians are more techno savvy as well much intelligent even though they wont allow U, bcos once allowing forieners means they need to upgrade themselve in all levels, also things involve social security of a forigner.better maintain distance. A bit racist tOO.they prefer to continue their own language,culture rather then adopt new one(english).whenever westren countries聽 want to strengthern economy - the first and Top most BAkra 's are Indians.[/color]

Y-axis has been involved in a lot of scams -- pretending they are selling visas to other countries and then not giving the money back. Please be careful, everyone. Contact the Norwegian government directly to find out what THEIR rules are -- do not believe everything you hear.

Dr. Shail - Norwegians have strict rules about this and don't allow doctors or nurses to work here unless they have passed certain courses in Norway. You will have to take college or university courses and get the Norwegian degree first, even if you already have a degree from elsewhere.

one thing for sure that is none will get job easy !!1 whether theya re doctor or nurse,psychotheraist or any specialist..people these is not U.S or Canada or Australia where people speak english ..so Better to think about your standing power as a money聽 wise than will plan to come.

I just like to know, I am person from pol science background, I had applied for job seeker visa but it was rejected for frivolous reasons i.e. funds shortage and travel insurance, when i furnished documents they agreed on visa. Another problem happened, i had given dates of 1 March to 27 August, 2012 in the travel insurance. I submitted my passport in late January, 2012, still I may receive my visa tomorrow or day after that.

Now my problem is will I get job in political analyst field in norway. I am doing job search of Y axis and am in touch with some professors in norway. But after reading this blog, i am really scared, Shall i go to norway? I know basic german, will that help, even if i dont get job in my profession, can i still seek job in some other field, in that case, will i get residence permit. kindly let me know asap. I have to make decision of my life in few days.

It is REALLY difficult to get a job in Norway. Food and rent prices are amongst the highest in Europe and it's incredibly difficult to find work. Your best chances of finding work would be in an engineering or IT discipline, should you possess the relevant qualifications. If you do not possess such skills, I would advise you not to come to Norway until you have found or are guaranteed a job. You quite simply will not get one no matter how simple the job may be.

I am suprised to see high profile candidates are considering to move to Norway.

Positive side of Job seeker Visa: You can stay in Norway for 6 months and search for job.聽 If you find a job in 6 months, then you have right for Permanent residency with 3 years.聽 Salary within norway are excellent.聽

Negative side of job seker Visa: It is difficult to find a job in Norway in 6 months, unless you have right references or if you can speak Norwagian language.聽 Most of the IT jobs or Engineering jobs have requirement for Norwegian language.聽 English speaking guys can get jobs, but 6 months is not enough to find job.聽 This is due to Norwagian way of recruiting.

Recruitment process in Norway: Norwegian comapny post a job in or Www. NAV.no.聽 They specify a deadline for job application.聽 This is usually 45 days from day of posting a job.聽 they donot look at the applciation until the deadline is finished.聽 You already lost 45 days of your time, before a employer picks up your resume.聽 They take 10-20 days to shorlits the profiles and call for interview.聽 Another month is spent to recive a interview call.聽 After interview, if you succeed to pass, then you shall be asked for references. Indian references may work.

But if you follow my text, you are spending two months to get a call for interview.聽 If you apply for jobs after coming to Norway, your successfull applciation shall be the one posted in first two months.聽 Probability of this is really low.聽

I request that guys should try to apply from India, talk to companies directly and seek their advice of either waiting in India or travel to Norway.聽 Every job in Finn.no or Nav.no shall have phone number of the relevent person.聽 In Norway it is legal to call the prospective employer and discuss before applying for job.

Again, if you take the risk to come to Norway to explore, remember that getting occumdation is extreamly difficult.聽 Cost of living is sky high.聽 Get in touch with Indians living in Norway and check the possibility of occomdation before travelling.聽 You consultant may not help you to get some place to live in Oslo.

I'm here in Northern-Norway right now on an EEA jobseeking permit, I've been here since February, have a BA Degree in an English subject, studied Norwegian for 2 1/2 years prior to moving here. Still no job. The most I've had is 1 phonecall in which the recruiter decided I wasn't suitable.

I'm pretty much living off of my Norwegian fiance, who earns decent money working as an engineer on a cruise liner. We both found our current accomodation together (studio flat/5000- p/month), but even that was stressful and we only got it because the landlords would rather have a couple living there. Northern-Norway is a little cheaper than the south, but without my fiance, it would be impossible to be here.

Just thought I'd let you know the situation of someone in Norway, currently on the permit you are hoping to get!

Don't give up, but do understand that it is very difficult! Especially if you don't have any friends in Norway.

Thrasher07 - thanks for sharing your experiences, which I think are very typical. I don't think people realize how long it takes to get a job in Norway - how hard it is. I have been here for 7 years and speak Norwegian fluently and still am only working contract to contract -- nothing permanent yet, but I am still trying!

No problem MammaPanda! I've seen you on here time and time again explaining the difficulties, so I thought I'd add my 2 cents!

I'd also like to mention something else;聽 Norwegian ID numbers!
I've had SUCH a hard time trying to get my D-Number (temporary ID number)!聽 I first went to NAV in February out this, and I am STILL waiting. (Think about the time involved waiting for important stuff, eating away at your 6 months here!) Admittedly, I think I have been unlucky with this because my local NAV had some problems, but without this number, I'm unable to register my address, get a bank account, etc...

At no point has anyone actually given me decent advice on what to do once getting here, where to go, how to do things... It really starts to grate on you after a while! I am here, first and foremost, because of my fiance, and my first permit was as a jobseeker because it seemed the best choice at the time. Hopefully soon that'll be changing to a marriage permit! I dread to think what it'd be like without him, I wouldn't have lasted a month! In a nutshell, it's hard as hell to survive as a jobseeker in Norway, practically impossible!

I have to admit that MamaPanda is just telling the truth, though it 's kinda discouraging but that's reality. I know some people who have been through the same situation and it's really hard for them. Some had even regreted why they came here.

I am from the US -- I have a PhD and speak English ahnd Norwegian (just to say that I am an educated person but it is still hard to get a permanent job!) you are right about staying positive, but it is also a bit depressing to live in a country where everyone is very rich and to not have much money. I don't think Norwegians understand how hard it is for us foreigners!
