I was born in Portugal in 1950. I came to Canada in 1956 with my parents, and we have been here ever since.聽 Recently, I found myself with the desire to leave Canada and going to Portugal is an option. My mother died a few months ago, and my dad 30 years ago. She has some land there and a bank account. I need to deal with Portuguese assets shared with my two sisters (also living in Canada). There is a Canadian Will and I have a POA to sign on my sisters's behalf. I assume 1. I have to get a Portuguese POA or a translation of it and Will here at the Portuguese consulate. 2. Inform the Portuguese authority of my Mom's death.聽 3. Get a lawyer in Portugal to get the Will prorated there. 4. Find buyers for the 4 land pieces there, mostly farmland with one piece for house building in a quaint village where I was born, 95 km north of Lisbon. 5. I guess I can apply for a Portuguese or EU passport since I was born there with no problem, I have a Contributor Number Card. Any advice?_

聽聽聽I sort of found myself in the same situation. I was born in Portugal in 1952 and we immigrated to the United States in 1961. After 5 years on a "green Card" I became a US citizen, taking the oath to forsake all other loyalties.

聽聽聽In 2022 I decided to visit Portugal. I also found out that I now could have "dual Citizenship". While in Portugal, Having taken every scrap of document that I had, confirming having been born In Portugal, Including my birth certificate, I applied for and received my documentation as a Portuguese citizen. I then set about purchasing some land in central Portugal Using an attorney as my surrogate.

聽聽聽The snag happened when I tried to get citizenship for my wife of 30 years. We had brought along our marriage license, her birth certificate, etc. something I had never heard of... all documents had to be Appostiled. (sp.)...

聽聽聽At no time was I asked for a Portuguese passport. I could apply for one, however, My US passport sofficed.

An EU passport is a passport issued by one of the 27 member states of the European Union and allows you to travel visa-free between all EU countries, and to a large number of third-countries the EU has bilateral agreements with.

Each country is different, its wrong to say an EU passport because there isn't ONE.

There is no EU passport. To have a Portuguese passport, first you have to apply for citizenship.

And canadians do not need a visa to visit EU countries (visa-free and stay for up to 90 days). Your passport is enough.
