I am a Canadian securing a lawyer to do our documents for NIF and D7. Do I have to pay VAT on their services. If I am currently residing in Canada and the address on our invoice is Canada I am reading that VAT does not have to be paid on the legal services provided.

They said I had to pay it when I explained about my citizenship and my address in Canada.

I approached the law firm on the VAT tax and this was their reply

鈥淩egarding VAT, we inform you that in Portugal, VAT is payable by the taxable person receiving the service and delivered by the person providing it, with the law of the country where the service is provided being applicable.

In this sense, VAT is due because, according to the Portuguese tax law, VAT for services provided in Portugal to individual customers is 23%.鈥�

not sure were I go from here. Trying to find Portugal tax infor that lays this out so I know if I am responsible or not for it

Consultancy services, legal advice and services related to intellectual property are generally exempt from VAT when supplied to non-residents.

It should also be noted that non-residents may, under certain conditions, be entitled to a refund of the VAT paid in Portugal, particularly in the case of tourism or when the expenses relate to commercial activities.
