residency certificate

Errolthedragon

Hi Julian and everyone!
Thanks for your welcome here.
I鈥檓 Catherine and my partner Shelley and I are planning to come to Portugal next September, doing Workaway鈥檚 to explore where we may like to settle and what kind of off-grid setup we might like to find/create.. We have a flat we plan to sell at the end of 2021 to be able to make this move when we know what the move is..!
Our big question right this moment is whether we need to come to Portugal before December 31st to try and get a residency certificate. As I understand it, we would need proof of residence, but we don鈥檛 have a rental of any kind and we are still living in UK until at least June next year..
We would be open to taking out an extremely cheap rental for a period of time (which we wouldn鈥檛 be spending any time in as we still have work commitments in UK). What we really need to know is what sort of length rental agreement we might need to bring with us to the town hall, or even if an Airbnb or holiday rental would be ok..
Anyway, I know this isn鈥檛 the thread to ask these questions on!
We really look forward to keeping in the loop with everything here and thanks for creating this space!聽 :)

Hi Catherine and Shelley,

Welcome to this forum.聽 :)
You've probably already read this:

What you should do:

-- Register as a resident in Portugal:

-- Register for healthcare as a resident in Portugal:

You can also check this I've posted a couple of months ago:
/forum/viewtopic.php?id=902977

-- Exchange your UK driving licence for a Portuguese one:

If you are resident in Portugal before the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020, you will be able to stay. I agree with you, the best way is to find something quite cheap to rent.

You can have an idea about prices, cities,... in this link:

Here you will find plenty of solutions by using a short/long term rental agency. For your case, I think the best solution is to rent something with a short term rental, ie less than a year, probably. If any member here has an alternative solution, please feel free to answer here.

Thanks Johnny - that鈥檚 really helpful!
I鈥檝e realised I鈥檝e been looking into getting a resident card, when actually - until December 31st and being treated as EU citizens until then..! - I understand we are applying for a registration certificate?
Thanks for the thread about rentals and agencies.
I鈥檝e been put in touch with an old friend who has a guest house in Portugal. I haven鈥檛 had a proper chat with him yet, but I intend to ask if he will be able to rent us a room for a nominal monthly fee in order to get a rental agreement.
Is this the road we need to go down, or would he be able to even just compose a letter stating that we are staying with him?
Basically, do we need an official rental agreement and how does that work if we were staying in an Airbnb for example - or is staying in an Airbnb not acceptable as accommodation for this purpose..?
Thank you again so much for your help! 馃槉

In what Airbnb is concerned or other similar portals or rental agencies, it is up to the owner of the local accommodation that is advertising on this site, to define the minimum number and maximum number of days that a guest can book in their accommodation and set up the rules of long-term rentals (see 1).

So you should look for long/extended stays, i.e. several months of stay, those you will need. This sort of stays is only available for some lets. In this case, it is almost certain that your landlord will ask you to sign a rental contract.

This rental contract will be necessary to request the certificate of residence, as you can read in this link:
