Future move to mainland Spain

Hi all,

New member here. My Husband and I are looking to relocate to coastal, mainland Spain in approximately four years. We will still be of working age. Can anyone advise on what the best steps would be, to prepare for this? We are based in South Wales UK and British blue passport holders.

What do we need to do with regards to visas, bank accounts and rental accommodation etc? It seems a minefield to find out valid and up to date information.

Thank you in advance for any help you鈥檙e able to provide.

Hi Deb,

Relocating to coastal mainland Spain sounds like an exciting plan鈥攚hat a great adventure for you and your husband!

As British citizens, there are some key steps you can take to prepare for your move, especially post-Brexit. Here鈥檚 a general guide:

Visas and Residency:

  1. Since the UK is no longer part of the EU, you鈥檒l need a visa to live and work in Spain. Common options include the Work Visa (if you plan to work for a Spanish company) or the Non-Lucrative Visa (if you鈥檙e financially independent and won鈥檛 work).
  2. It鈥檚 a good idea to start gathering documents early, as applications often require proof of income, health insurance, and criminal record checks.

Bank Accounts:

  1. Opening a Spanish bank account is often necessary, especially for rental payments. Many banks are expat-friendly, so you shouldn鈥檛 have trouble finding options.

Rental Accommodation:

  1. Websites like Idealista and Fotocasa are popular for rentals. Be cautious with upfront payments and ensure any rental contract complies with Spanish law.

Healthcare:

  1. Spain has an excellent healthcare system. Depending on your visa, you may need private health insurance or access to public healthcare once you establish residency.

Tax and Financial Planning:

  1. Moving to Spain could impact your tax obligations, so consulting a tax advisor familiar with UK and Spanish systems can help you plan ahead.

We know this process can feel like a minefield, but with the right preparation, it鈥檚 very manageable.***

Best of luck with your exciting plans! Feel free to reach out with any questions鈥攚e鈥檙e happy to help.
