Replacement NIE

I have padron in Santander but my job means I move all around Spain. I am currently working in El Prat, just outside Barcelona but only for 6 weeks before returning to London for a couple of months and then back to Spain but not sure where I will be working (and it will only be temporary) as my company has 12 places throughout Spain
My NIE has become faded and illegible. The bank would not let me open an account because they couldn't read it.
I want to claim El Paro so I think I need to get a new card and I don't know if it is better to report it to the police as lost. In this case would they issue a new one or would I have to go to the Foreign Office as well?
Or should I just go to the FO. Do I need to go back to Santander or can I go to the office in Barcelona and get it replaced on a temporary address in Barcelona or other town in Spain?
I am so confused. I have searched on the Internet but my case is not straight forward.
Any help would be really appreciated.

I do not think you mean an NIE.聽 That is an A4 piece of white paper.

However this should help.

TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE POLICE FOR聽 NIE,聽 E.U. Citizen registration, etc.
