Moving to Madrid from NYC

Hey everyone! I am an American living in NYC and potentially moving to Madrid next February and have a bunch of questions. I've been to Madrid a bunch of times as my girlfriend is from there so I have a good feel for Madrid and the culture. I have some questions though regarding actually living there that are hard to get neutral perspective from my girlfriend who has lived in the US for the past 12 years.

1. I work in Finance and have 17 years experience. Any advice for getting jobs and tailoring my resume for a job in Spain. I am beginner level Spanish.

2.聽 What type of salary should I be expecting. I know Madrid/Spain is not a high paying market (thankfully its not expensive relative to the USA) but I've been told I should be looking in the 50-60K euro range. Is that correct or is it realistic to get a higher salary.

3. I play ice hockey. Does anyone know if there is an adult men's league to play hockey in Madrid. I've seen online there apparently is a professional team which makes me believe there must also be local recreational leagues/teams but I know ice hockey is not big in Spain.

4. What other things should an American know before moving to Madrid outside of the obvious things that google searches tell you?

Any input would be very much appreciated! THANKS!

All the best

Bhavna

Hello Mark, I have lived in Madrid for most of my life and also lived in California聽 and Uk.

To your questions:

To 1 and 2. I聽 am sure you can get a聽 good job in finance in Madrid. I do not聽 work in that field,聽 but a聽 salary of 50-60k聽 seems聽 too聽 low for a 17-year experience. Send a聽 private聽 message and I can try to help with the CV聽 and guide you聽 with the search.

To 3,聽 my son plays roller hockey聽 and field hockey is also聽 played a lot.聽 You will probably find ice聽 hockey as well, as Madrid is very big and offers many different sports.聽 You might want to explore that first and choose a聽 house/apartment聽 not far from the area where hockey is player.

Happy聽 to help with any other聽 needs.
