You can open a bank account in Spain with just your passport (although perhaps not at all banks) but you do need a mailing address and phone number whether in Spain or outside.

Sorry but your post could be misleading.   

That is why I asked njnjnj to read the info and then post again so that I could make an informed reply reply to suit their situation

What's misleading about it John?  We landed in Mallorca in 2016 and opened an account at DB right away and without a NIE. 

We didn't have a NIE until 6 months later.  It's called a foreigner's account and once you become a resident you can change the account type. 

I'm pretty sure we also opened an account at Caixa before we got our NIE although their fees are ridiculous!

That one might be allowed to open an account without an NIE does not mean that one is not required. 

With a non resident account one must also have a non resident certificate , renewable  every two years,  otherwise when Hacienda discover you have the account it will be frozen.

PS.   I have taken the trouble of confirming this with AEAT (Spanish tax authority)

First ask yourself if you really need a Spanish bank account.
In reality you may need it only for some, but not all direct debits, so rarely.
Otherwise, avoid like the plague.
They charge lots of outrageous fees.
If you have an European bank account elsewhere, you can usually pull funds from ATM's without any cost, certainly with certain bank networks.
Payments you can initiate from those European bank accounts and they arrive in 1 to 2 days at most with the addressee.
For purchases in stores you can use your out of country debit card without problem.
If you are an American, it won't be easy, maybe impossible to open a bank account. Thank the US government and its Fatca rules for that.
As to an NIE number, those you can get often locally in your home country at a Spanish embassy. They will be valid for 3 months and one can renew then locally with the Policia Nacional, which is also where you request your long term NIE after 6 months.
Make sure you have a decent health insurance and can show the policy here. It is a requirement for anyone staying long term.
To avoid having to deal with direct debits at all, get a rental that includes utilities being charged by the owner, so that he retains the responsibility to pay the utilities and you just provide the funds.
To avoid dealing with the robbing phone companies if you give the usually mandatory direct debit, buy instead a prepaid phone card and add a balance online or through bank ATM's or buying cards at stores.
Card/bank companies outside Spain that are very useful for these purposes are  such  companies as Transferwise, PayPal, Monese and Revolut (probably one of best).
Basically avoid allowing any direct debit access by Spanish businesses to your accounts. Fixing such issues often takes weeks, especially with the big banks which are nothing but Spanish government buddies so bureaucrats.
If you must, start with a midsize regional bank instead. Those also often treat you more like a human being. They are more hungry for business.
Also get a cell phone card before you go to the bank. They will ask for a phone number and it is necessary for online access of your bank account.
Otherwise, welcome to Spain.! It is a worthwhile adventure.
