I don't have experience of buying a car, but I am planning to buy one, and here is what I have discovered so far:

It is best to buy Toyota, Nissan or Hyundai because they are popular brands, there plenty of them on sale, and it is easier to sell them when you leave.
Sedans are cheaper, of course.

From what I see on the roads, the most popular cars are Toyota Corolla, Toyota Yaris, Nissan Sunny, Nissan Elantra, and Nissan Tilda. Second hand cars are within your price range depending on the year. Of course, the newer the car the better.

If you are buying second hand, make sure the car doesn't have any issues. You can check online the history of accidents if you know the number of the car you are buying. Otherwise, it is a good idea to take it to an independent garage for assessment.

Buying from a dealership has a plus - the car will mostly likely be serviced and checked. However, it is slightly more expensive than if you are buying directly from owners. But with owners there is a risk to buy a faulty car. I am a total beginner so I would not risk it. If you are more experienced with cars you might reduce this risk.
