Navigating friendships as an expat in Kuwait

Hello everyone,

Moving to Kuwait reshapes many aspects of life, and friendships are often one of the biggest changes. Whether you're maintaining lifelong bonds back home, building new local relationships, or forming connections with fellow expats, friendship in expatriation comes with its own joys and challenges. We invite you to share your experience to help fellow expats and soon-to-be expats:

Have you found it easy to connect with fellow expats or locals in Kuwait? Why or why not?

Have you noticed cultural differences in the way people make friends or share personal matters?

Since moving to in Kuwait, how have your friendships back home evolved? Do you ever feel 鈥渙ut of sync鈥 with friends and family in your home country?

How do you deal with the temporary nature of many expat friendships when people (or you) eventually move on?

Have you changed the way you approach relationships since becoming an expat?

What has been your biggest challenge in building or maintaining friendships in Kuwait? Any advice to share?

Thank you for your contribution,

Cheryl

Moving to Kuwait has been a positive experience for me, especially when it comes to friendships. I have found it quite easy to connect with both fellow expats and local people because everyone is generally respectful and supportive.

One thing I noticed is that people from different cultures may take different amounts of time to build trust, but once a friendship is formed, it is meaningful and long-lasting. Working in a multicultural environment has helped me understand and appreciate different traditions and perspectives.

Although I miss my family and friends back home, modern technology makes it easy to stay in touch through video calls and messaging. At the same time, I have built a new circle of friends in Kuwait who make life here enjoyable.

The biggest challenge is finding enough time to socialize because of work commitments. However, with a positive attitude, kindness, and respect for different cultures, it is possible to build strong and lasting friendships in Kuwait

Hello Hema great,

Thank you for replying.

Out of curiosity, how long have you been living in Kuwait?

Thanks again for your contribution!

If you don't mind me asking, where are you originally from, and what brought you to Kuwait?
