Establishing a business

Hi everyone,

I've been thinking about starting a business in Kuwait, the problem is I found out that despite the high consumption rate and the purchase power, Kuwait is pretty much is a saturated market for almost all kinds of businesses.

Anyway, to cut a long story short for you I want to do something productive and could grow in the future, something that could make me quit my job and focus on my own business.

Do you have any ideas, tips or suggestions? Highly appreciated.

Start a magazine - a travel magazine. Orrr open a cafe/resturant. The market will never be saturated for anything that is food related! People hang out to eat! Socializing and food come hand in hand. U can then expand ur portfolio from there after u start making some profits :)

AAG kinda looking like clowns? seriously? every trip to the mall is like walking to thru the circus!

ok, everyone goes with restaurants, but u will reach ur peak real fast and business will decline after that.

my two cents; fashion mon ami. tailor-made clothing. little overhead in terms of material, good market, lots of ideas.

but u need a q80 partner for anything unfortunately :/

Thank you for the feedback and great ideas my friends. One thing I noticed in Kuwait is that people go for the biggest spenders, quality is not something that really matters. If you're a restaurant or a cafe that serves a bad coffee, it doesnt matter! as long as you have those fancy coffee cups, decorztion, etc. =D

I want to stay away from food its a complete headache. Make up?? What would I know about make up, the only make up I use is my deodrant and perfume and maybe some facial cream whenever my skin is dry =D

Legacy you know you did bring up an interesting idea but let me ask you, what do you think about hand made accessories or jewellry?

Well, you dont need a kuwaiti partner if you're going online, and if you're going to have a physical store then its not a big deal you can easily rent a business licsense from kuwaities, lots of expats do it.

i have a brazilian friend in the business of import-sell for hand-made jewellery, i can ask her and let u kno how the market fares.

basically all u need now is a website and an ad on facebook, and ur in business.

speaking of coffee shops, in uni we had a case-study on a coffee shop in israel, whose name in hebrew literally translates to imaginary, the entrepeneur behind the idea found out that most people go to coffee shops to socialise, and odnt really drink coffee or eat anything. so he had a coffee shop setting, where u pay $5 on during the week and $10 during the weekend to sit around and chill with friends, and if ur really thirsty he'll throw in water. he gives u empty plates and cups "for show".

so yeah, i think u might be onto something with hand made accessories.

id start off with some market research, print a few of ur items, and ask people to rate them, select a price from a list of choices etc. get a feel for it.

with pleasant looks and a pleasant personality, im sure u can ask strangers in a mall for their opinions, coz lets face it, ur friends would be biased. or even try it online, as im not sure if u need like some sort of license to speak to people in the malls, maybe on the streets between malls :P

You know, that coffee shop idea is not bad at all. This is exactly what you need in a place like Kuwait. All you need is Wireless network, nice open place where everybody can look at everybody =D

Hey guys... I was into jewelery for a long time but really did'nt work out so well i had to shut it down.. I use to get all sorts of imitation and hand made stuff from india , china , korea etc.. there is a lot of headache in jeweleries as well .. u need to be up to date with the latest , u need to keep traveling a lot to see whats the latest trend as u just cant depend on the suppliers..

Moe29, we actually discussed the idea of opening such an enterprise in the "Arab" world, can u imagine asking someone to pay for something imaginary? i think the general reaction would be their taking off their egal and using it as a whip!

in any event, let me know what u plan and we can brainstorm further; i had initially thought to open a cafe/ bookstore, but somebody stole my idea and beat me to it :/

hahaha no way, this is going to be perfect for people here. You know how much they're in love with staring, hitting on girls and vice versa, and the fact that they love to TALK and show off.

I think I'll explore the jewellry/accessories further, I do have a source who makes such stuff and needs a window to Kuwait. Nevertheless its always good to target females, they're the biggest spenders here. I think I can start small with an online stoe and some targeted online campaigns, maybe display some items as well if possible through exhibitions or people who sell at the malls.

The cafe is a good business, but not a bookstore, the new culture doesnt support books as I can see =)

ok how about this, an imaginary coffee shop with nothing but electricity plugs and 1001 laptop/iPhone/iPad/Blackberry chargers,

we can call it "Plugged In" :P

PS If anyone dares steal my idea without giving me credit, I will sue them for everything they're worth :P

Moe, web designers are a dime-a-dozen here in Kuwait. u need only log on to facebook to see all the ads for knock-off websites that sell counterfeit watches etc.

find someone, preferably a friend, who can guide you as to how to set up a website that takes orders etc. im sure that will be your main expense. then it is all about building supplier relations, proper costing for your inventory, and storage (since they're small i suggest keeping them at home, or even use those storage companies in shuwaikh).

the next question that draws itself is how to get the goods here, as carrying anything in excess across airport customs is bound to raise suspicion, even if it is merely clothing.

i salute your drive and ingenuity, and if u need a partner in this, if you do decide to take it further, please do let me know :)

I had had experience about the middle east and I was merely pointing to the fact that individual expats in middle east countries especially in GCC are subject to lots of restrictions when it comes to starting a business. Just because there is a business running round the corner, it does not mean any once can open such a business, you need time , time and time... Working class does not have it...
One of my friend lost quite a lot when he partners with some one to setup a business just because there are no clear laws as of yet on the ground.

Now please do not judge the book by its cover and you don't have to reply to every thread, get a life dude outside expat forum, it is lovely...

I think Legacy does speak on behalf of a lot of this thread readers coming from "being constructive" point of view.

Second of all, we have a proverb that says "If you wanted to say something, say something good, otherwise keep silent"

Thank you for the valuable information legacy, I actually do have a friend whose a designer. I already got the goods and all the stones, gyms, etc as they items would be hand made here. This thing has been going on for sometime but I actually developed the interest for it after posting my question and getting the feedback from you guys.

I'll definitely keep you updated with my progress and I know I will definitely need your advices and thank you very much bro =)

@Moe29: No worries bro, i have no problem sharin my quasi-business-knowledge. plus, when u deal with items of "glamour", such as clothing etc. you are free to set your own price (so long as it is not too high that customers will shy away from it, or too low that u dont make a profit)

you go out to any mall in kuwait and u see small stalls selling trinkets.

i mean, u must have heard of the "mini-egal", which is a replica of that black thingie that gulf peeps wear over their ghitra, that u can wear around ur wrist. that thing costs 1KD a pop. who would have thought? and the entrepeneur behind the venture is rollin in dough, i even saw it in Qatar.

Thanks buddy, I got more actually but thought I'd try to post few here and see the reaction as to how the designs look to people. I did the photos quickly and didnt edit the colors wanted them to look as real as possible.
