|The shorts I wore were just above the knee but definitely not hot pants material. Although my wife has done so many a time, albeit covered by an abaya haha

Offensive?! I didn't notice that, I have walked with my friend in one of Riyadh's malls (Tamimi) and was wearing a short since he was just out of the gym and NO body even looked strangely at us.... So I think it's ok as long as you are not a gal
HOWEVER, possibly Hay'a staff will stop you if you pass by them ... I didn't run into this personally neither I want to ..

Yess, I've seen a saudi guy walking in the street in short with no concerns on his face ... but to be frank, it was close to a gym and obviously not his casual clothing..
The article is true "theoretically" AND from Islamic point of view. However, realistically, not all obey strictly to this particular point although many of them are relatively religious and pray the five times daily.... Anyway, my comment above was that I didn't notice that it was "offensive" in their culture as supposed!
