Welcome, hope you like the area.
Be prepared for a completely different way of thinking and doing things.
Things take two or three goes before you get the full picture of what you need to do etc, you will be homesick pretty much straight away and wonder what on earth you have done moving to a different country and leaving family behind.
Please, make friends with fellow expats at work go for coffee with them and get a little network going.
Depending on who you work with is what is available for you do to on your free time, it may be that you will need to adjust your sports expectations for a little while.
Once you have your iqama, you can go to a mobile provider and purchase a phone sim and a data sim for an internet box. This internet box is something you carry with you to convert 4G into wifi, so you use that to connect with your family back in he UK
I'm sure if you ask your fellow colleagues they will give you pointers on how to get around and where to purchase your box etc.
The most important thing is to give yourself time to recalibrate and adjust.

My husband lives in Saudi, FaceTime seems to not work there anymore. Facebook video chat is the next best thing!

You can use apps like IMO and SOMA - they work well ... Entertainment is Bahrain - and keep yourself busy - join a Gym maybe - fitnesstime is awesome - if you are not living in a compound..

Thanks all for your replies.  I've been a little preoccupied,  moved into khobar two weeks ago and am finding my feet.

Living in a hotel for now, boring but it does the job. Made it to the mall last Friday and today,  but apart from that not done anything.

Won't have a car for a few months (although not sure if I mind that!  Having seen far too many accidents already!) so I'm limited on what I can get to do.  Uber taxi service has been good though!

So now I'm here,  any recommendations for anywhere to go on weekends or things to do?  Have been out today and bought new trainers.  Are there any groups that meet weekly/monthly?  My colleagues are all eastern expats,  I'm the first western expat working for the company.   They don't seem to want to socialise or talk about life out of work, so left to own devices.

I'm not an expat but I lived in Khobar for a few months so I thought I might help. First I'm sorry about your colleagues, hope you find someone with the same interests.

Khobar is actually one of the best cities in car accidents rates here in Saudi Arabia, you should see other cities but I would recommend you to get a car in the future, no worries you'll get used to driving here.

Unfortunately there are not a lot of places to go here, maybe some malls (Aldharhran mall and Alrashed mall) there's this place Dugaither village. Later when you get settled in here you might wanna go to Bahrain, lots of fun can be done there. You can get a subscription in a gym, Fitness Time has some branches in Khobar and Dammam.

khobar is nice place, you will face some difficulties to different culture and roles, but you will used to it , and notice that you can find everything and comunicate easily with your family.

(pun intended) im actually pretty much in the same boat as you i also started running altho its after 8 when it gets a bit cool or really early in the morning. im also looking for a place to play squash and a partner. from what i hear there is a place at nahda and qadisiyya club. im in thoqba where are you? would be great to go for a run on the corniche
