warnings and danger for tourist in Turkey

Hi,

I am supposed to be in Ankara these days...but due to flooding in Manila, it still keeps me here. While waiting for the day of my flight that will be by next week , I am preparing myself to meet people in Turkey, by doing so, I am reading a lot about their culture, tradition, warnings and danger to foreigners and including relationship with the Turks.Instead of feeling excited I am quite nervous....about fraud by taxis (50 lira to 5 lira), scam (being nice and offer to treat to fancy restaurant or bar but later run away and you pay the shocking bills, because they come in as group).....and more. To ladies who are swayed by handsome and young Turks were fallen to their trap and ended losing their valuables, i felt pity on them. Most of this things happened to European tourist. Now, I am wondering if this happened to you as well specially those living quite longer in Turkey. Please help me clear my mind. I've been working abroad for several years and had some bad experiences. This time I have to be cautious and be prepared to any harm I might encounter.I want to come to Turkey with good memories about the country and its people.

To concerned ppl..add or email me at porcupine_jan@yahoo.com,

Looking forward to hear from you guys out there!

Is anyone stupid enough to fall for this?

To: HaileyinHOngKong ,

I've read enough about that danger and most of their preys are from EU, needless to include American, Canadian, and other nationalities.who are also in business trips and holiday vacations. Find out yourself, they are canny and organized, so don't try not to believe or trying to say the victims are dumb. It's real and hard to believe though.....
victims will be victimized.
So did you still come to Turkey after all? Maybe we can be friends :)

hI,

useful tips, gonna use it soon. thanks a lot.
hi erkan,

yeah , sure turkey is an amazing country.
The rules here are the same for women travelling alone anywhere.聽 Don't accept invitations from men you don't know - only use registered taxis always sit in the back. - don't stay in cheap dodgy hotels - carry your valuables safely.聽 Don't get drunk - don't accept meals drinks from strangers. Don't dress in a provocative manner - eg too short too low too tight - look like a hooker and people will treat you like one.聽 Remember Turkish women don't spend time alone with strange men.
It is no different to anywhere else in the world. Especially countries where the majority are Muslim. The men think being a foreigner means you are easy - and quite often they're right!
I've lived in Turkey for nearly 3 years now and I've had no problem. Yes the men will try and befriend you and offer you a drink or to go back to their place to 'show you something'. Don't be stupid and don't trust them! Turks for the main are very friendly but men are men in any country and will try and take advantage of a woman. Don't let their bad morals take advantage of you and use your brains. Don't walk at night alone, don't accept lifts from strangers - especially men and don't lend money in Turkey because 99.9% of the time you will not get it back no matter how bad the sob story is. The two most common stories I hear here are foreign women falling in love with a Turkish man, then he takes a second girlfriend and all your money, the second is someone lends a Turkish man money due to some sob story and they never get it back.
You will enjoy Turkey as it has a lot to offer in both culture & experiences but if it doesn't feel right it probably isn't.聽 ;)
our culture is really different for you but i am sure you will get over it and understand us :)
Hi聽 Jawyn,
聽 聽 聽 My聽 聽Kabayan聽 if u are聽 feeling聽 scared聽 and nervous聽 going in turkey,聽 you聽 must not go, did you say you are going to work聽 there with tourist visa?
聽 聽 聽 Why聽 dont聽 you check聽 other country to work like ISRAEL and CYPRUS聽 or聽 GREECE...nothing much聽 restriction there..
聽 聽 聽 As聽 for聽 my experienced聽 i lived in some ISLAM countries like OMAN where cultured is preserved聽 women and men they wore tradional muslim attire...I聽 do not have problem in this country and the people..i jog every morning at the cournish聽 going to souk, going at the hotel to swim and聽 get taxi聽 ALONE.,Omanians聽 do not have much english skills but for me i have no problems connecting with them..same thing dubai and other arab emirates country including PAKISTAN..
聽 聽 I am scheduled to travel in TURKEY聽 聽as a tourist ..i canceled聽 because of the people protest againts govern ment and all that burning stuff on the streets.
Hi JANWYN
聽 聽 You聽 mention about relationship with the turkish men,Be aware ,if you have the same religion like them ..i think聽 not much conflict...
What rubbish about protests 陌stanbul is a massive city and the protests affected only a very small area.聽 陌gnorance about Turkey is very widespread come and see for yourself much safer than most UK cities and no gangs of drunks roaming the streets a good and effective police presence. Are you seriously suggesting Greece which at the moment has massive civil unrest and 陌sreal 陌 think you prespective of the world is somewhat out of touch.聽 Working on a tourist visa is not possible and be aware you do and get caught it is instant deportation eg get your case and escorted to the airport.
Elow聽 JAWLYN,
聽 聽 聽My kabayan聽 sorry聽 to hear from you聽 that your applied visitor visa was denied..It聽 seem聽 you likely聽 want to see the counrty.

I do understand why someone wouldn't come because of the way the media portrays the protests etc... If you live in another country and you only have the media to go by then you have no other form of reference. But I was in Istanbul last week and saw none of the protests. The only annoying thing which I will warn people about in Istanbul is to be wary of is the enormous amount of Roma (gypsies) that seem to be there all of a sudden. I've been to Istanbul many times and have never seen them like this. Young and old and very aggressive living in the parks. Please be careful of them. BTW they don't seem to be Turkish as they don't understand Turkish when you speak to them.

Hi all;

I was in Istanbul when the protests started .... I have not seen or heard anything ... my stay was very well :)
danger lures in all corners of the earth..in general Turkey is a safe place but you should expect also that like every country you'll met people who think very differently..in this geography there's been a lot of factor that contibutes in how some people look at the foreigners..some tips might be helpful for you: dont attract unnecessary attention, dont be too nice coz some may think that your interested in them even smiling and looking in their eyes s a big NO,if somethings suspicious just go inside a store..with the taxi scene it even happens to Turks themselves..if you're gonna work here be sure your employer gonna process your papers when you get here its kinda risk to work but your visa is tourist.just be careful..you can drop me message..thank you.
