Introduction : We wish to settle in Tampico

Hello all, thanks for the welcome!

We are a young at heart couple, in our mid-70's.聽 Thankfully, we are still in good health.聽 My life partner is a dual citizen of Mexico and the US; I am聽 an American.聽 We have lived in Mexico in the past and have a lot of family and friends there.聽 We are considering making a move back to Mexico from central Oklahoma.聽 We are tired of the toxic political corruption and lies in the USA. We wish to settle in Tampico.

my wife is dual citizen as well.聽 Bought a house in Cuernavaca and we move in DEC with my permanent residency at that time if all goes well.聽 Good for you y bienvenidos!

@Ewker

Thank you for your response. My brother-in-law lived near Merida for a while and loved it.

Could you offer any insight as to what you do for health treatment insurance coverage please?

@jeff2026

Hello Jeff.聽 Thank you for responding.聽 I am interested in your experience with obtaining resident status and how you plan to cover medical expenses while in Mexico.聽 Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks again!

Hello Corky,

Thanks for asking, everyone's situation is extremely different, and the regulations change all the time, see 聽 for the most recent information. In my case, my wife is a dual USA/Mexican citizen, so my temporary resident card is valid for two years (if not married to a Mexican citizen, it is typically four years).聽 To get this card, I had to ask my county court of records for a certified birth and marriage certificate, send them to my state capitol to get apostiled, and then to an official government translator upon arrival in Mexico.聽 My wife and I then presented all of this at a local Mexican immigration office along with our passports and bank statements showing financial solvency to show you will support yourself there.聽 My two years are up in JAN 2027, so I need to make an appointment NOV 2026 for the first two weeks of DEC 2026 for my permanent residency with the same documents, and check to see a month or two prior on any changes in documents required.聽 We will also need to update our address to the house we bought there and provide a utility bill with one of our names on it.聽 Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions, where are you living now?

Corky, as for medical expenses, this has been a conundrum.聽 Feel declining medicare part B, paying routine care out of pocket and relying on IMSS to help with large expense procedures (or pay those out of pocket if urgent) will be less expense in the long run.聽 Penalty of 10% to monthly medicare deduction USA charges for each year you are out of country to return and receive medicare sounds too harsh, they should expand medicare to cover citizens of the USA living in Mexico IMHO.

Thank you Jeff, that was very informative in both responses!聽 I did not know about the 10% penalty; isn't that wonderful! Required to pay penalty for saving Medicare money.聽 Anyway, many thanks to you!
