I have been going there for many years and have a Mexican family I know there. Apparently recently there is a crime spree going on and many Expats in the area have been taking many precautious a few years ago that were not necessary. Hopefully things will get back to normal in the future.

Your best bet now in Puerto Vallarta which is loaded with Canadian and American Epats and has all you want and is safe and friendly. Surfing and windsurfing is good in Sayulita about a 45 minute drive on the highway out of Puerto Vallarta heading for Tepic and Guadalajara and is very quaint and has a surf school right near the many Palapa restuarants and bars on the beach.

Bucerias has a good selection of the same and always friendly Canadians and Americans sitting on the beach to chat with and only about 15 miles from PV. I have 2 friends from Canada that winter there in PV and 1 in Bucerias and have for 4 or 5 years and haven麓t a bad thing to say about the place, yet.

There are some golf courses and good medical facilities there.

Can you expand on what type of crime and the precautions that everyone is taking? Is it petty street crime or more violent crimes that are occurring? Day and night? Are they targeting certain establishments/areas? Are the police doing anything to crack down, or are they part of the problem? Thanks in advance.

"PLAYAS DE ROSARITO.- An armed and hooded squad, armed with AK-47s, entered a "table dance" on bulevar Popotla, and kidnapped the manager of the establishment while they fired inside and outside, which caused terror among the customers in the tourist zone.

According to police reports, the events happened around 10PM on Saturday at the "Doll House" table dance, located at kilometer 29 on bulevar Popotla.

The squad, made up of five men with black caps, broke in with large caliber AK-47 rifles called "goat horns," they strafed the interior and forced the customers and workers to hit the floor, which caused terror for everybody in the place.

The men headed for the office where they found the manager, named Antonio Garc铆a Aguirre, 52 years old, who they took with them.

They forced Garc铆a Aguirre into a red Voyager van and then fired some shots and fled in an unknown direction.

Inside the establishment were found spent 7.62 x 39 cartridges, used by the AK-47. It should be mentioned that the outside sign for the business is very small for the size of the building, and it appears it is a clandestine night club.

Inside are billiard tables and white seats and a space with a pole in the center of the room. The municipal police started an operation, but as usually happens in these cases, they did not find the squad, nor the person kidnapped."

"Note: We haven't seen anything likethis in Rosarito Beach recently that I can recall. They did kidnap a furniture maker at his factory last year- but nothing violent and in the tourist zone like this event. Yeah, it's a strip club owner who was kidnapped if that matters to anyone. It doesn't matter to me- a legal business is a legal business. They probably tried to extort money from them first. If the bad guys ask for money and you don't pay- this or worse happens. You can't reason with these people and no one is exempt from extortion and kidnapping. You hope you will only have to pay one group for protection, that they leave you enough money to live on, and that someone takes them out of the game so you will (hopefully) be left alone again.

I've heard there are "new players" in the area. I hope the police release more info as the story develops."

Business robberies are high, kidnappings, extortion, inept police, home break-ins, muggings, murders, day and night crime.

My wife and I own a condo just a couple of kilometers south of Popotla. We've been visiting and living part-time in the area from Rosarito Beach to Ensenada for years. We have never felt any concern about our safety or that of our family in all of that time. Is there crime in Rosarito? Is there not crime everywhere?

I guess if you hang out in the company of "underground" strip club owners or those engaged in the drug trades, no matter where you happen to be in the world, you should be concerned. But if your are a normal person going about your life you shouldn't have anything more to worry about in Rosarito Beach than an American citizen that goes to a movie theater in Colorado or Texas, or a public political event in Arizona!

It is common knowledge Rosarito has gone from tranquil to over the top. Yesterday 3 bodies were dumped on the streets there , 2 after being tortured in colonia Benito Juarez for all to see. It has changed lately and is worse now.
