Bikes are covered under my separate condo insurance policy as personal effects.

Check your renters/homeowners insurance policy if you have one. Where I live a basic tenants property policy can be had starting at R$600 a year thru a bank just as an example.

Personally speaking, it's a $700 USD bike, so, I wouldn't be buying a policy for it anyways. Buy a Kryptonite brand bike lock from Amazon. Should you think you need coverage, for theft as an example, then perhaps you shouldn't buy it, as perhaps the risk of loss is too great where you plan to use it.

@alan279, sorry for asking - is this a bicycle or motorbike?  I love riding both bicycles and motorbikes but I keep reading about accidents happening on roads.

I wonder what the insurance will cover if an accident were to happen... Bike, medical bills, etc?

I'm wondering the same thing, I learned to ride a motorcycle just to ride in Brazil. Hahah!

But now I'm thinking about how many people get into accidents there.

As you spend more time here, you won't need to read about that:  it'll become part of your daily life.  As inflation pushes up the cost of both cars and fuel, the number of motorcycles and motorbikes has multiplied in all of Brazil's major cities from an already high base, and their owners' attention to the traffic laws (never good) has gotten even worse.  Sometimes it's the bike that hits the car, sometimes it's the car that hits the bike, but the loser(s) is/are generally the person/people on the bike, of course.  We passed a new collision on the way to dinner just last night; any week when I see fewer than one or two I count as a good week.

The scariest thing I see in Brazil is a man and a woman in flipflops on a motorbike with a toddler or two between them, no helmets for anybody.  That, too, is a very frequent sight where we live.

My wife, whom I met in 2000, was a physiotherapist in Rio who specialized in amputees. Back then, 80% of her patients were from motorcycle accidents, 10% from other diseases, and 10% from train surfing in the suburbs.

Therefore, no motorcycle for me......heh.

The amount of lane splitting and general disregard for individual safety is astounding IMHO. And then you have I-Food, Uber Eat's, drug stores, etc, all using motoboys.

Yeah, a pedal trike. With fat tires for the beach. It costs R4.000 and SURA quoted me R$360 per year for insurance. Porto Seguro declined to insure the trike.

I'll buy a U lock to lock the frame and front wheel to a convenient immovable object while I'm out, and a concrete floor anchor in the garage of my apartment building.

Oh, and I'll just ride the trike on a grade separated bike path and on the beach, not on streets.
