Navigating friendships as an expat in Colombia

Hello everyone,

Moving to Colombia reshapes many aspects of life, and friendships are often one of the biggest changes. Whether you're maintaining lifelong bonds back home, building new local relationships, or forming connections with fellow expats, friendship in expatriation comes with its own joys and challenges. We invite you to share your experience to help fellow expats and soon-to-be expats:

Have you found it easy to connect with fellow expats or locals in Colombia? Why or why not?

Have you noticed cultural differences in the way people make friends or share personal matters?

Since moving to in Colombia, how have your friendships back home evolved? Do you ever feel 鈥渙ut of sync鈥 with friends and family in your home country?

How do you deal with the temporary nature of many expat friendships when people (or you) eventually move on?

Have you changed the way you approach relationships since becoming an expat?

What has been your biggest challenge in building or maintaining friendships in Colombia? Any advice to share?

Thank you for your contribution,

Cheryl

Take everything with a grain of salt & I mean everything!

When you stop adding value to the relationship, don't be surprised if it fades away,

Never render an opinion based on your culture but contrary to theirs. (Yes, I have examples...)

Don't take offense if you start feeling like a walking dollar sign. It's not personal.

Try to leave your culture at home but never compromise your personal values to "fit in". You'll regret it.

Hello all,

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts! 馃槉

I have to say, you got me curious when you mentioned that you have examples of situations where opinions based on your culture did not quite align with the local way of thinking. I would be interested to hear at least one... Only if you are comfortable sharing.

Cheers,
