New Online System to Pick Up C茅dulas

cccmedia

To pick up a C茅dula, the Ecuadorian ID card, you will need to make an online appointment first.

Starting next week, this rule affects those picking up C茅dulas at five governmental locations in Ecuador's largest cities -- Quito, Cuenca (two offices) and Guayaquil (two offices).

You will find more details at cuencahighlife.com, in a double-dated column (Aug. 31 and Sept. 1) that is a translation from the original news article published at El Mercurio.

---

Although the article states that passport pickups are also being handled this way, that may be only for Ecuadorians (not Expats), since -- for instance -- USA passports have historically been available only at the U.S. Embassy or a U.S. consular-authorized location.

Your new c茅dula cannot be lost or stolen.

Ecuador's government has come up with the

following brainstorm...

The national ID or c茅dula should be digital ..

and it will be mandatory for every resident

including Expats to obtain a digital c茅dula.

"This is something you can carry on

your phone that is available for scanning,"

said Ecuador's telecommunications minister,

Vianna Maino.

"[i]t provides a level of security for your identity

not available with the hard copy," she said.

Maino also pointed out that the new

c茅dulas cannot be lost or stolen, thus

removing the annoyance of replacing

a missing ID.

Expats have long been expected to present

their c茅dulas when buying 'mercanc铆as'

at a supermarket .. when doing most

bank transactions .. when dealing with

government paperwork .. and when

purchasing medicine, electronics or

other 'cosas sofisticadas'.

My non-digital permanent visa for Ecuador

was honored earlier this month while traveling

from Bucaramanga, Colombia, back to Quito.

For years, I have been carrying a copy of my

c茅dula unless I have business a the bank, the DMV ..

or am traveling.聽 This has reduced the likelihood of

losing the ID or having it stolen, neither of which

misfortune has occurred.

---

So here are a couple of questions we will need

answers for...

-- Will residents be allowed to keep using existing

non-digital c茅dulas until expiration?聽 (My c茅dula,

issued in 2014, is good for a total of ten years,

so the renewal date is a couple of years away.)

-- Will all c茅dula owners be required to own a

portable phone?聽 Apparently so.聽 Is a flip phone

good enough .. or will even 'campesinos' need

to own a smart phone?
