Hello to all

I have been living in Quito the last 2 years. Internet here has progressively grown worse in my neighborhood--my work depends on it being up and stable(streaming data on financial markets). I am using Netlife but in the Orchidias section of Quito it has gone from good to pretty bad. I am considering a move to Cuenca and wonder if anyone would care to comment on聽 the different ISP's there and how the service is.

Internet quality is dependent on an ISP infrastructure and not necessarily the city you live in. To put it simply, you can move to Cuenca or anywhere for that matter and have similar bad quality of internet. That is something that is important to understand.

There may be technical reasons why your connection is 鈥減rogressively getting worse鈥�, but it鈥檚 probably because the bandwidth that is allocated to your area is being shared by more people now than it was 2 years ago. This is an indication that your internet provider hasn鈥檛 upgraded their infrastructure and as a result you are sharing your speed with more people.

You probably can get better quality internet by remaining in Quito but by moving to an area that has fiber optic internet infrastructure in place. You can also achieve this by moving to Cuenca, and if you鈥檙e interested in the latter, Google Cuenca Tech Life, and you鈥檒l find a blog of a knowledgeable and friendly expat who has reviewed probably all ISPs in Cuenca. But beware as I emphasized it鈥檚 not about a city but an ISP, so if you want to move to Cuenca, make sure that the area and specifically the residence you intend to move into has fiber optic internet availability.
