Expand your social circle in Venezuela

Hello everyone,

Moving to Venezuela means leaving one's family and friends behind. Creating a circle of friends or joining an existing one should therefore be paramount in order to fight loneliness in your host country.

But how can one develop a social network in Venezuela? Where and how to meet people there?

How easy is it to meet locals? What about cultural specificities?

Share your advice and experience!

Hi,

it is easy to meet the locals - as long as you speak a little castellano, at least the 'infinitiv version' like 'yo tener hambre'. Almost everyone starts like that!聽 Very few people here speak english, only those who in the 1970s during the oil-boom (in Europe oil-crisis) went to university in the USA.

We here on Isla Margarita have a way to help in that.

We have a 'round table' every Saturday 2pm and Sunday聽 (a bit later) on the beach in Porlamar where we meet to chat.
'We' - that is a mixture of many nationalities including locals. We meet on the Playa Bella Vista. In front of the wellknown Hotel Imperial (Av Ra煤l Leoni near the end of Calle Campos) there is a building named Beach View Palace and to the left beside it a low old building and beside that one a path going down to the beach. That is where looking to the left you'll see a bunch of folks laughing, chatting, drinking beer. That round is good to practice your english, german and castellano and to exchange experiences (some of us have been here for 20+ years!)

聽 Some 4 years have passed since your post. I wonder if聽 the situation is still the same.

There is an聽 tide of expats from Europe and immigrants from Latin America in Spain. Westerners look for cheaper real estate and better weather; immigrants flood the country, bringing new life to an Europe increasingly 'tense'聽

I was planning to visit the Brazilian Nordeste, but some Venezuelans drew my attention to some areas: Sierra de M茅rida and Valencia. Of course Isla Margarita is always an option. Yet I wonder if the Tropical heatwave is currently affecting the island.
