I am a Quebecois living in the town of Terrebonne in the suburbs of Montreal in Quebec, Canada. I am 58 years old and have been married for almost 32 years. I work as an actuary in Montreal and I plan to retire at age 64 around October 2024. We will also have to optimize our retirement savings over the next 5 years in order to enjoy a pleasant retirement. My wife and I have a great retirement plan, which is to live 12 months a year in the Dominican Republic. We took a trip to an all-inclusive RESORT in Cayo Coco in Cuba last January and when we returned to the extreme cold (-25 to -30 degrees Celsius), followed by episodes of black ice and slush (wet snow), I thought to myself that I really didn't like the 6 months of winter which often start in November and very often last until mid-April, which is the case this year. Moreover, the winter of 2018-2019 that we just had was particularly harsh with heavy snowfall!! I said to myself that it would be really great to be able to benefit 12 months a year from a very pleasant and sunny climate far from the cold of Quebec. So I inquired and the region of Sosua in Puerto Plata seems to be experiencing significant economic expansion in terms of the development of construction projects (villas) in secure communities (gated communities). We don't have any children and our parents are deceased so we don't have many ties to Quebec apart from a few good friends who we are going to invite to spend a few weeks with us in the DR when we are settled. I looked at several projects and here are the ones that we find very interesting: - CASA LINDA: Several models of VILLAS fully equipped with quality materials (granite countertops in the kitchen and bathroom, mahogany doors, porcelain ceramic on the floor, etc.) similar to what can be found in Quebec, air conditioners in each bedroom, private bathroom for each bedroom with glass shower, fully landscaped grounds with in-ground swimming pool. All this for a very reasonable price between US$190,000 and US$230,000!! This project also has common areas such as a large swimming pool, some restaurants, shops and boutiques, tennis courts, training room etc. - ENCUENTRO RESIDENCES: New project with modern villas similar to CASA LINDA and turnkey. - VILLA TISU: Very similar to CASA LINDA I inquired and there is a tax convention between Canada and the DR which is VERY ADVANTAGEOUS which ensures that double taxation is avoided and which limits the tax of a Canadian living in the DR to 18% of their income... WOW!!! There is no problem receiving government pensions (RRQ and PSV) I also inquired at the DR consulate in Montreal and to obtain a residence permit you only need to have monthly retirement income of US$1,750 for 2 people. I also read in the HUFFINGTON POST that the DR is one of the best places in the Caribbean region for doing business and real estate purchases. There is also an ever-growing community of expatriates (Canadians, Quebecers, Americans and Europeans) who are settling in the region of Puerto Plata, Sosua and Cabarete. I would like to obtain information from Quebecers who settled in this region of the DR to find out how their new life went in terms of adaptation etc. I thought I would have to take a container and have our furniture moved by boat but it can be very expensive around $20,000 CAN according to ALLIED VAN LINES!! So I don't think I would pay such a price and would rather buy furniture and appliances in DR in stores like PRICE SMART, CORRIPIO, LUNARES, LA SIRENA etc. Rather than having a villa built, there is also the possibility of buying an already built villa which is often sold with furniture included...
