My expat journey

Grand Baie, Rivi猫re du Rempart, Mauritius

Grand Baie, Rivi猫re du Rempart, Mauritius

Always up for helping Small Business and people with advice and writing expertise. No charge, I'm retired now and want to choose the projects that interest me.
Writer, speech writer, marketing strategy, public relations, media liaison, media training, script writing, tv and radio commercials, Political strategy for Ministers and leaders, and Top 100 listed companies.
The people and the lifestyle, the food, stability and fresh air, good fruit and vegetables, Indian culture and food, mixed race country, quality homes, residency possible.
I would like more equality for the Mauritian people, less divide between the rich and poor. More education opportunities for locals, better service for those who only speak English.

Reunion, Florida, USA

2018 - 2022

Reunion, Florida, USA

Buying a large home in the USA for rental as well as our home there, we decided on a Spanish Villa near Disney World to have good ROI. We also bought a three bed condo too for rental. We spent 50 % of our time traveling the World, and staying in Cuba. Initially Cuba was about the Cars. plans were made for the Cuban old cars to go the Australian Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne, but the USA changed course on their relationship with Cuba. The Cars were unable to go through the freight services in the USA to Australia. Even though we had achieved approval by the Grand Prix Management to have them in Melbourne. In Cuba, it was all philanthropic work by my husband and I.
We started our Erotic Art Gallery website. XXX in the USA after waiting three years to sell due to our agreement with the IRS in coming with a tax free art collection which was bought for personal use, and only selling it in our retirement.
The USA is a consumers World, you buy too much, eat too much and then have to store all your unwanted items otherwise you cannot move in your home. So choice is amazing and so competition is great and prices low, except for the hidden contracts which can catch you out for services.
Covid and the Biden administration caused the people to loose their way and wokeness overtook the disease in its numbers. The people could not care less for service and helpfulness any more. It just got worse, prices went sky high and attitudes if you were white were racist. People were getting shot daily for no reason. So time to leave there with our lives.

Havana, La Habana, Cuba

2015 - 2021

Havana, La Habana, Cuba

Lived in Havana on and off over the past seven years, in an apartment in Havana Vieja (old city) we renovated the apartment over six months using Cuban bought fixtures and building materials and builders, back to the bare bones. We also made the roof top into a restaurant for all people in the building to share, and installing new water tanks for community use too. The purpose was to help Cuba and Australia make political links to share ideas and services which happened in medicine, education and the arts.
In Cuba, it was all philanthropic work by my husband and I. We also were making plans for the Cuban old cars to go the Australian Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne, but the USA changed course on their relationship with Cuba. The Cars were unable to go through the freight services in the USA to Australia. Even though we had achieved approval by the Grand Pix Management to have them in Melbourne.
The People are fabulous, and due to their isolation they have a pure view of the World. No bullying here in schools. No gender issues with people who dress in clothes of opposite gender. Religious tolerance. People are highly educated as learning is free even in Universities. Medical free and great quality too.
Food sometimes scarce, like basics, meat and bread and milk UHT. Even beer can run out! Difficult to find building materials as most things come from overseas except a few. You can wait 6 months to buy a sink for the kitchen as we did. USA attitude make life tough for a very proud and educated people.

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Jun 1956 - Nov 2018

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Born there and married and have three sons and 10 grandchildren, six of mixed ethnic race.
I am a company director of a diverse company both in the USA and Australia registered, but not operating in Mauritius. Dealing in Public Affairs originally and also a building/renovation business for a while for investment purposes.
My home town is always in my heart
The Politics and Covid Lockdown rules went too far, destroyed the economy and peoples savings and businesses.

Do you tip in Mauritius and how much? by Guest140423

Cost of transport from Airport by Madeleine Jonsson

Hi, I'm coming to Mauritius in 11 days and I just wondered the transport rate (taxi, bus) from the airport to Port Louis? Cheers, Madeleine

anne8639

@Madeleine Jonsson I usually get to the North, Grand Baie for around 2,200 Rs so Port Louis is a 3/4 hour closer to airport so maybe under 1500, just bargin and they come down, they will walk away if you have gone too far. Read More
