A few years ago I came to Italy on an extended vacation (I called it a 芒聙聹sabbatical芒聙聺 just to make it sound impressive, but let芒聙聶s be honest…). About midway through that trip, I wound up in Rome and on the first night I fell in love with the city . On the second night, I fell in love with one of its inhabitants (who is now my wife). So a few weeks later I returned to the US, settled up my affairs, applied for a visa, and came back to Rome to live. Rome provides constant stimulation but also a lot of frustration for the uninitiated expat. With the help of my Italian wife, I've been able to figure a few things out along the way--it's "l'arte di arrangiarsi," as the Italians say...the art of getting by. But I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. It has really opened my eyes to the world and given me new inspirations for every facet of my life.
