The costs vary tremendously, the cheapest method is to book a 20 footer on day X, get all your stuff packed away yourself, hire a truck and transport your goods to the place where they have the container ready. Pack the container and watch it sail away. You'll also need a clearing agent at the Libya end.

Word of advice - DO NOT send your shipment to Tripoli, the delays run into weeks. Rather have it sent to Benghazi or Misurata and then truck to Tripoli.

Thanx Sandmanpedia!!!! We decided to leave the big stuff in Madrid! I guess that small packages (20kg), the best option would be airmail post, right? Do you know if there´s any customs problem? The stuff would be baby toys, clothes, coffee machine?

You'll find that there are a lot of courier companies offering a door-to-door service for smaller shipments. Usually works out cheaper and means you don't have to go through the hassle of finding a clearing agent at the Libya end.

Hi, I have shipped stuff 3 times now from the UK. 20' container which took about a week to clear customs. Car body parts (used) which took 3 days. I did not even see the parts till they were on the car and then I would not have recognised them. Shipped from UK scrap dealer, bought online, direct to the garage. Kitchen stuff from the UK and this took 2 months to clear from Khoms. Agent absolutely useless. info@marfamar.com

The first 2 came to Tripoli.

It is all down to the agent. imslibya@libyaremovals.com  These guys handled the car parts and were excellent. However they are very busy.

I have a car coming in from the US, I will let you know how it goes.

If anyone knows of another good agent please post here as is absolutely essential to get someone who knows what they are doing.

Nice to have this information. I´ll probably have to send small boxes, no big stuff. I´ve been investigating with DHL and similar, and they charge like 450 euros for a 20kg box. That´s almost the price of an Airplane ticket Madrid/Tripoli.

I talked to the Libyan embassy here (lazy and useless) and they told me that mailing a box usually works, or not!!! Simple as that. So I´m pretty lost, mail is the cheapest, but might not get to Tripoli, Courrier are way too expensive...

Any other experiences?

only mail to use is Courier mail. A letter from UK took 2 months to get to me at the Corinthia. The airport customs hall is overflowing with stuff. Mainly for onward destinations and is a huge problem.

How much do they hit you for in duties etc for used vehicles? I'd like to import a couple of bikes

I meant the smaller, privately run courier operators. The DHLs and UPSs always rape you even on smaller shipments.

Mrs Sand has a couple of magazines on subscription, these come by normal snail mail to the company PO Box and usually arrive 4-6 weeks late. Very slow but they all get here eventually.

I can second this recommendation.  These guys handled our 20 foot container into Tripoli from Canada and are now handling our 20 foot container out from Tripoli to Malaysia.  Not sure on prices as we haven't had to pay but they are doing a great job of making my life easy.

Hi Sandman, not sure how much they will charge yet. Just depends how much they believe I paid for it:/. I have heard though that the customs at Misuratta access the Kelly Blue Book and others for an accurate second hand price. They did not believe that ALL the cars from New Orleans (after Katrina)were only worth 1k or sometimes less I heard.

I have moved my housing furniture and my motorbike from France to Tripoli in a 20' container.
All went OK, and the goods arrived to Khoms, and were cleared in 2 months (A record since it was in Ramadan period though...)

I have paid 2000 LYD for customs on the bike, as the customs officers estimated it's price 3500 USD so around 60% fees.

- Shipping fees were around 2000 LYD
- Transportation from Khoms to Tripoli costed us 500LYD.
- Unloading the container was around 150 LYD as it is easy to find workers for 15LYD an hour.

You also need to pay a 750LYD deposit for the container.
It is usually handed back when the container is returned to the shipping company within 2 days. You can negociate that with your clearing agent.

IMS is here right now and I can't be more pleased with them really.  I sit and watch Dr. Phil, they pack.  Awesome.

The import duties on the car may get super exepensive depending on type of car (up to 65% for some luxury cars ie Land Rover)
