The title is self explanatory. Not intended to stir up any racial hatred but need some answers from the locals. Any input would be welcome. Please be respectful of what you post.

Is it true that Muslim and Hindu weddings are frowned upon. Does this even exist in Mauritius. If a boy is Hindu or Christian and a girl from a Muslim religion, marriage would not be possible or vice versa.

Hello MaisonMaurice,

Though not personnally concerned with this topic, I must say that family background and upbringing play an important role in shaping your personality, ideas and values.

Unfortunately, some families can be prejudiced (not only concerning religion but also involving other aspects of our dear mauritian society like same sex relationships for instance). That would be wrong to say that everyone welcomes interfaith marriages in their families. Some families are still much prejudiced and their children have grown up with these biased values.

However, the large majority of people in Mauritius tends to be on the more understanding, liberal side and more and more couples are of mixed faith. People are gradually begining to understand that marriage is a private affair between 2 individuals and should only matter to these 2.

So yes, interfaith marriages exist in Mauritius and are common. As for being frowned upon, yes in some families depending on their mindset but fortunately it doesn't represent the majority of the Mauritian population.

Regards,
A
