Hello All,

Thanks for taking the time to read this post. I have a few questions that aren't necessarily answered in this review of Cambodia.

I am currently seriously considering relocation from the "States" to Cambodia. Although a move like this would be somewhat unprecedented in my circle, I still would like to see what the world offers and not be holed up in one place and not experience other cultures and life.

I have a few questions if anyone would be interested in answering them.

In regards to Cambodia, what is the outlook the locals have towards Americans? How likely are you to be a target of racial profiling and scams. Could a 29 y/o live a reasonable middle class on 1100 USD a month?聽 Now, I understand some of the budget depends on your quality of life so I will try to narrow it down a little bit. I'm not a big spender, I do enjoy some of life's non-essentials but on the whole I live in the U.S. (Florida of All places) on 1600 a month.

Basically, the only thing I'm concerned over is the day to day safety and my ability to experience the life of Cambodia at a reasonable rate.

u'll be fine. the locals see all foreigners as a walking wallet but otherwise you will be okay . PP is a small town, u can live just fine with 1000$, as long as you keep in mind that people are after your money and narrow your聽 choice of friends based on that

. your rent and bills might come up to 350 at the most , that if u live alone in a decent apartment( by decent i mean clean and with sufficient natural light ) and use the AC.
internet costs anywhere from 12 $.. and you can always take a job, as a teacher of english, part time even ( if you're in desperate need for money ). the general requirement is for you to be a native english speaker ..that about it ..

That's not to bad... Is the Expat community a sizable one? Not that I would only associate with expats but someone who is relatively honest and show me the ropes would be appreciated.

sizable yeah but not really a community N not that sociable either .. be prepared to be on your own a lot

..that unless聽 you are a good christian聽 going to church every sunday and or are comfortable with having Christian missionaries as your closest friends ..they're the friendliest people i have personally聽 met here.
Been living in PP from the past 11 months ..well i'm a muslim and i do look like a muslim so that might narrow my socializing opportunities quite a lot .. but you minght be fine

Well I've just begun my search. I really won't know until I hit the ground running. I would really like the quiet life, but also within an hours drive to a large city.

Phnom Penh is the largest city聽 and聽 its large enough to walk it from one end to another聽 i guess.. the only transportation within the city would be聽 the random guy with a moto聽 and the tuk tuks.. other than that its either you get your own bicycle or moto or car or walk.

Rents are cheaper outside of Phnom Penh. Here in Sihanoukville, you can find a small place for under $200/mo. PP is dirty, crowded and dangerous. Better living down here.

Hey Madmax,

I was thoroughly entertained by your blog. I hope the book turns out well. I spent almost an hour reading through the whole post by you. And you handled that situation excellent and congrats on the upcoming nuptials.

Also, thanks for the info. I'm looking at the map as we speak and then cross referencing it to population density and my best guess estimate on what a city that size looks like. Trying to determine or atleast narrow down a hopeful destination.聽 My ultimate goal would be somewhere quiet but within 30 mins of drive time to the nightlife and social amenities.
