Don't worry.

Yes the pollution is bad up North. China is a big place. Why not move to a location with less pollution?  I would suggest a coastal city. I mean, that as a teacher, your options are very open and you can live just about anywhere in China.

I live in Zhuhai.  Almost every day is blue skies and fresh air.

But, it's also pretty darn warm. At least up North you will have seasons. Warm is fine, but it take a bit getting used to. I've been in the South of China now for over a decade, and it's only been in the last year or two where I have been comfortable with the tropical environment.

Now, everyone wants to move to Shanghai or Beijing because that is all they know.  Big names...big cities... all with big problems. Yet, you come here and ask expats what we think.  Well, there are charms about Beijing... I personally like the HUGE servings of dumplings you get for a reasonable price in Beijing, or the Shanghai snacks at night.  But there are other considerations to take into account if you have a child... YES?

Noise, crowds, dirt, traffic and pollution isn't really what you want to expose your child to.  However, if you want them to learn Chinese and speak like a native...then Beijing is the place to go.  Don't let me dissuade you.



BEIJING, China

The South of China is very much like living in Thailand, but with intelligent nerds. Thailand is a big tourist nation.  China is a nation of workers. You move where you want your children to grow up and survive.  You want them to be happy and well prepared for life.  China can do that, and your children can thrive, if you adapt.

Wow this is a beautiful city, I've never heard of it..i dont really want to move South i rather be central. Right now im teaching in Daqing city, the coldest place I've ever been  its been a year and there is no way im staying another year. Im still interviewing with some schools but the first offers im getting is these two polluted cities

Zhuhai is next-door to Macao.  I am a 10 minute taxi ride from the Macao border.  The ferry to Hong Kong is a five minute walk from my house.  The ferry ride is 70 minutes long.

As far a beautiful places, consider KuMing.  There it is a year-round spring time. It is in the South, but in the mountains.  It is absolutely lovely.



Outsde of Kuming.

Wenzhou is about a two hour train from Shanghai. It is on the coast, and has seasons, but no snow. My wife is from there.  It is actually quite nice, but very money oriented.

Xiamen is a super beautiful city on the coast.  If you stand on the beach you can see Taiwan. It is not super hot, but winters will not be cold ether.  They have great schools and an amazing amount of modern skyscrapers.

The pollution won't kill you. Beijing isn't one of the most polluted cities in the World. It's getting better.
