If it's fun, it isn't a waste of time.
As for recommending surf spots, I'm far too old, fat, and uncool to know many. Bali is the big place everyone knows, but it's crowded and expensive so I can't recommend popping over.

Others, probably far younger, not overweight, and cooler people write articles on the subject



Edit - I know much of Java very well so can suggest, if the surf is good, giving locations there a try. Lombok is pure beauty.

I'm from the UK and have been a surfing fanatic most of my life although getting a bit old now. Back in the 80's I spent a lot of time surfing in Bali and regularly contributed articles to a surfing magazine back in the UK.

Of course, Bali has it all as far as waves are concerned, but it can get crowded and the local surfers are sometimes aggressive. But with waves like Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin, Canggu and even Sanur and Nusa Dua, it really has some world class waves. You can also surf on the outer reefs near Kuta, Kuta Reef and Airport left can be excellent. The good thing about Bali is that it's easy to get to the waves.

Sumatra is full of amazing waves. The West coast, especially the islands off Padang and further north the island of Nias are world renowned surf spots. You can google all this information about where to surf, surf camps etc easily. Sumatra is really nice because it is more remote than Bali or Java.



The other famous surf spot is G-Land in Java. I read about G-Land (and Nias) since I was a teenager, but have never surfed either. But G-Land is Gradjagan on the Southwest corner of Java Island.



Lombok is another island with great surf, although have never surfer there myself:



If you are feeling even more adventurous then you can consider Sumbawa.



One really great thing about surfing in Bali is that if the the waves are blown on the Kuta/Uluwatu side out or have really strong onshore winds then you can easily move to the southwest coast to places like Sanur or Nusa Dua where the waves will be offshore.
