!!!Stuck and need advise urgently please

mama_sing8

Hello everyone, I need a quick advise on a challenge that I am facing.. I had a job offer in Malaysia, where I was supposed to move by the end of this month, but somehow the visa process got more challenging.. My employer processed the work permit through an organization called MDEC (that I have little knowledge of) and who provides me a letter with a reference number that should be used on my visa process on the embassy, in my home country, although, in here they said that they need the immigration authorization letter to give me the visa, which is the opposite of what the letter says, and guess what, of course the embassy would be right... So since the need is urgent, my employer suggested to me to come over with a tourist visa and to start the application upon my arrival!!! I am confused and don t know exactly how to respond, I have my one way ticket on next friday, which I should of course change for a two ways ticket with an open date on the return one... I guess that this situation would cause me a little troubles on finding rental and also opening a bank account on the same occasion, soo could any one help me list all the challenges that I might find, beside being expelled of course if I am not that lucky.....
Any advice would really be helping.
Thanks all, Cheers

1. Why wont your employer provide you with the letter - perhaps it is not in English?
2. I have heard this happen on many occasions so it could be classed as "typical"
3. You dont need a two-way ticket, you just need an onward flight out of Malaysia to avoid difficulties.
4. The visa can be processed after arrival
5. There will be no problems in finding rental, unless the owner/agent asks for a copy of your EP (unlikely).
6. You usually cant open a bank account until you have your EP anyway. The company needs to write a letter just confirming your status with the company but it must have the company stamp on it.

All the above is OK and you could perhaps book a one-way cheap air ticket with Air Asia or Malaysian Airways to a nearby location e.g. Singapore, Phuket (Thailand), Bangkok, etc. It would need to be before you legally need to leave the country according to your nationality. e.g. 90 days. If you have correspondence from the company asking you to just arrive in Malaysia then that may also be sufficient at the border control. But if you want to be sure of no hitches then get a ticket out (and hopefully use and enjoy it).

What is your nationality and do you need a visa to travel to Malaysia - remember that you will need to apply for a tourist visa and so leave time for that to take place as you wont have your visa by reference.  You need something unless you are European etc. and dont have to get a visa.

If you have correspondence from the company asking you to just arrive in Malaysia then that may also be sufficient at the border control.

God bless you gravitas, it helps to know that this could be typical as I was afraid that it would be a scum or sth, I was about to get suspecious about the whole thing ... :-P
Well since I am from morocco, I ll need no visa, I ve been in Malaysia last April and if I remember well I had no issue entering and they didn't check my flight ticket on my arrival so I hope It won t be an issue neither this time.
I was thinking also that opening a bank account could be challenging and hopefully that the idea of the company confirmation could help.
The accommodation will be in charge of the company as well for the 1st month, and in this circumstances I would ask for them probably to take in consideration the time of getting the proper visa. And hopefully I would be able to join my new job with no problem during the visa process.

In most countries you are expressly prohibited to work on a Tourist Visa. What do you plan on doing in the meantime while your Work Visa is being processed? What do you intend to do if the job offer is a scam?

It is rather strange that anyone making a legitimate job offer isn't prepared to furnish you with all the necessary proof of that job in order for you to obtain your visa. I would be rather wary if I were you, check more fully into the legitimacy of both the job offer and the so-called employer. Have you been in direct contact with the company where you would be working or is this a job offer coming through an agency of some kind?

Google the company and visit their site, if there is a "Contact Us" link use it to confirm the job offer, if not e-mail them at the e-mail address of the "official" company.  Also, Google "name of the company + job scams" and see what results come back. It is surprising just how many people DO NOT take such basic steps to protect themselves.

Hi - I had to go through the exact process you defined. Came here on a one-way ticket with tourist visa. I showed the mdec letter and my contract at immigration. I was let into malaysia :-) then my work permit got processsed.

Yes, its OK to work while the EP is being processed. Its quite usual here as Malaysia has a two stage process. The company first gets permission to hire a foreigner and then permission to hire a particular person. A "visa with reference" is provided and the EP is put into the passport once the candidate has arrived and given their passport to HR.

Make sure you bring all your paperwork, original certificates, original documents etc. with you as you are going to need them all. The company will probably make copies, write on the copy that it is a true copy of the original, and stamp them with the company seal, before submitting them to immigration.

Copy that, thank you all for the advices, it s surely re releaving to know that other ppl had the same process  :)

The company letter is what is required by the bank to open a bank account. Without the letter you will not be able to open one. You always need to take your passport to the bank to do any transactions or make arrangements.
