Went on a Trip from Ormoc to Tacloban Yesterday

Hi,

With my Visa expiring this week, my wife needing to go to Department of Foreign Affairs, and my NBI Police clearance, last week we went to the Barangay Hall and got a transportation pass, then went to the Health Department and got out Health Certificates.  No charge for either.

Not knowing what to expect, we left early, and only had to stop once on the way to Tacloban to show our permits, which took about as long as a NASCAR Pitstop. There were other checkpoints, but they were closed or they waved us by.

We went to BI office, and they only see 4 expats at a time, but it wasn't busy, so we were in and out in under 20 minutes once we parked the truck.

My wife and I had applied online for an NBI clearance back in March, and she went to the NBI office at Robinson Mall Ormoc, but they said I needed to get mine in Tacloban to pick it up.  I arrived to pick up the letter, like my wife did, but I had to fill out applications in duplicate, provide copies of my Passport, then had to walk six blocks to a mall for passport photos, go back to NBI, and got black ink fingerprinted.  Told me to return in a month to get the clearance letter. It took almost 2 hours to get through the process.

The return trip was, again uneventful, with the police checkpoints not manned or just waving us through.  At the Ormoc Checkpoint, all we had to show was our city QR code, which the official recorded with his phone.  Did not asked  for other documents.

Thought this might help others in the area. Might be different elsewhere.

What was your impression of Tacloban, I spent two weeks there a couple of years ago and thought it was a complete dump, nothing to do at all

BI was an easy in and out, but besides that, I usually stayed at Hotel Oriental, good food, cool show, but any place else in Tacloban, I cannot say.

Well they got hit really bad during Typhoon Yolanda in 2013. Over 6000 people died due to the surge and much of the infrastructure was destroyed, which in the Philippines sometimes means it never gets rebuilt.. it might never be the same after something like that.

My wife prefers areas in the Visayas other than Tacloban, since the native language in Northern Leyte and Samar is Waray, so to communicate, she has to speak Tagalog.

Bisaya is spoken in most of Leyte, Bohol, Cebu, Mindanao, Negros, and Panay islands.  YMMV.
