You need to decide how much money do have to spend each and every month.聽 How much you have in savings that you will not touch. Health insurance coverage you want. Live style you want, bars. Bars girls, wild or a quite live. Do you want to only eat what the locals do or do you want to eat western style of food.聽 What type of place you want to rent western style or local style. What is your Health like.聽 What are you comfortable with and what are you not comfortable with.

What type of weather do you want and have you lived in it before. You must visit the place before you retire there for a few times at least 2 to 3 months worth each visit and not during the high season but the low season as it's not as nice and the high is normally only 3 months or so of the year.

You have a lot to do before you move anywhere and do not go by the YouTube videos as they are not telling you w6yiu need to know聽 for the most part. Living some where and visiting are completely different.

Thailand is the place for you Robert, when you know where to go the place is unbelievably cheap, so cheap you could live on your state pension alone with no problems. I live in the Isaan region away from the tourist areas but only because my wife is from that area, the whole country is incredible, with the friendliest people on the planet. Give it a go, whats to lose.

I'd recommend Walnut's advice.聽 I have the good fortune to have seen much of the world, mostly business trips, but a good sprinkling of vacations.聽 I have a list of 7 countries where I want to spend a few months each (all but one I've been to before.)聽 Spent 4 and 8 months respectively in the first two on my list.聽 Liked them, but each had things that started to wear after awhile.

Stuck back home due to family responsibilities, but expect to be in Thailand (third on list, not order of preference, but logistics of travel) within a few months, for the stay I can get for a tourist visa.聽 Got all the paperwork for a year stay, but balked at the required full year of insurance paid in advance.聽 This will be my fifth visit to Thailand, but the first to exceed 10 days.

Give yourself a chance to test the very different environments before making the commitment as well.聽 Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Phuket will be different vibes, but with luck, one will feel right.

I would suggest that you plan several long trips before you make a decision. A permanent move to a totally different culture at retirement age is a big thing to undertake.

I live in the North West of Ireland and it can be lovely in the summer, but when I retired 10 years ago I started to spend most of my winters in SE Asia. I have spent time in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam and while they all have a lot going for them, I like to keep a base in Ireland to return to. Personally, Vietnam suits me best but I think I am too old to try to make it permanent. You could easily spend a couple of years visiting all of these countries before you make a decision. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages.

Have you visited Thailand before? Even saying that being a tourist is completely different to being a resident. As its already been said, I highly recomend visiting the place first a few times just to get the feel of the place especially if you are going on your own and not knowing anyone.
