Zika Virus and Dengue Fever

Hi All,

Thanks for taking the time to read my post. What do long term expats think about the rise of the Zika Virus & Dengue Fever and living in Thailand? What preventative measures do you have in place?

Thanks

Well unless you're a pregnant woman, or planning to soon be then you shouldn't worry the least about Zika, even then you shouldn't because this whole issue has been blown way out of proportion. Zika only causes flu-like symptoms and is not a fatal disease. Once you've had it you're immune from that point on.

Why the WHO is even listening to the misinformation coming out of Brazil I will never know. As someone who has been living here in Brazil for 14+ years now, I can tell you that the so-called research coming out of Brazil is pure BS. What passes for a doctor, or researcher in this country wouldn't be allowed to practice as a veterinarian in any developed country. There is absolutely no proof whatsoever that there is a link between Zika and microcephaly. In fact, there is much more proof that it isn't, and there are numerous already known causes for microcephaly.

Dengue is something you should be more concerned about since there are 5 different kinds of Dengue and it can be a fatal disease. Currently there is no vaccine and no cure.

These two diseases are transmitted by the same mosquito, the Aedes Aegypti, and it is only the female. The mosquito usually stings the feet and legs, so if possible wear long pants, socks and shoes. The use of a good mosquito repellent is highly recommended.

Don't need to become another Zikaphobic, relax.

Cheers,
James
