Thinking about using http://tesolvietnam.net/ to get into teaching...

tynneale

Sounds cheap and easy but just wondering if anyone knows anything about these guys? I just cant afford to to a TEFL course the "normal" way and this seems very inexpensive and efficient...

A little sus' on it though. Works like this apprently..

"Registration and preliminary training before arrival $100.00
(This includes Visa, accommodation, travel assistance,
pick up at airport, and module one on ESL before you leave
your home country-preparation for practical training)

2 day in-class practical TESOL training $250.00
(Intense activity based teaching techniques, practical class-room control
and management, access to massive activity libraries, planning lessons,
Unique delivery techniques. You will leave this section and be placed in work.)

Practicum $100.00
(You will observe and make written comments on a number of classes
conducted by already working teachers- Your comments will be evaluated for
credit towards a full TESOL certificate.
Following this, you will deliver a limited number of observed lessons in a
Language Centre for credit towards your certification.
It is often at this stage that an offer of work is made.)

At the conclusion of the practicum, you will be issued with a TESOL INTERN certificate which allows you to obtain a Work Permit via an employer-

On-Line academic component $225.00
This component is conducted with our international accreditation partners
in UK- NORWOOD ENGLISH
Most people complete this section within 2 months.
When completed, you will receive a TEFL certificate direct from
Norwood. Show us this (or any other suitable TEFL certificate) and we will
issue your full TESOL certificate and teacher licence provided the
requirements for the intern certificate have been completed.

You may be working whilst completing this last section. Learn while you earn.

As you can see, the program is completely modular so you can sign up for only the sections that are applicable to you- Maybe you already have a TEFL certificate-Each situation is unique."

Any feedback would be awesome, thank you!

It's Cleverlearn that's doing the in-class training/practicum, so be careful.  They have a bad reputation, but so do most schools here.

I'm wondering what the "teaching license" is.  There is no such thing, in Vietnam.

They also claim you only need a high school education, which is not true.  Maybe this is a way for those who don't have a uni degree to get around that.  If so, it's the first I've heard of it.

The Norwood site says nothing about Cleverlearn.  I also found it interesting that this link shows the TEFL/TESOL course as being discontinued.

norwoodenglish.com/courses/tefl-tesol-taster-course/

Who issues the TESOL?  Cleverlearn?  No thanks.

A better place to post the query would be daveseslcafe.com, if you can tolerate the censorship.  That guy's a jerk, imho.

Thanks for the post.

Thanks for that. I'm actually being slowly seduced into the idea of doing 4 weeks onsite training in Thailand now... hmmm.....beaches and warmth. Ahhh. Could fly to Vietnam afterwards..

It's hard to find a school with a good reputation.  I can't think of any offhand. Maybe ACET.  I can't recall having heard anything bad about them.

Sounds good.  You should go to work for them.

Mr Suavi

I dont have intentions to work for them. I am confused as to why you say in 1 post they have a "bad reputation" and then the next post in the same thread you said :"I can't recall having heard anything bad about them."
so which is correct in your opinion?

and thanks to the mod for deleting my tag to the other website with a man's name and word that is a synonym for a place to get coffee....don't know what the beef is there but I read the terms and conditions and could not find the part that says I cant provide a method of communication that benefits the users.

oh well..:(

ACET is the school I was referring to.

Have you watched/listened to the video?

I think it's a first take.  Low budget, as usual.  This degree would be a complete waste of time and money.

Mr Suavi

thanks for the clarification.
Agreed the video is hardly professional grade.
noted your comment that this cert is a waste of time. Having spent 3 days now reading hundeds of posts on numerous forums, I can only conclude that there are about 10 different ways to get work as a language instructor, ranging from no cert/no exp to MA/BA/CELTA/DELTA/HELTA SKELTA...

As everyone has a different opinion and all may be right, I can only be sure of one thing and that is to just do it any way you can. Results will vary of course, probably proportionate to opinions.

fyi I have never been to Vietnam. One day I might.

this probably brings this thread to a close...
