The train is your best bet.  It's the safest way of travel and will get you there within a day or two.  Should cost you around 500,000 VND ($25 /18 euros /15 pounds) since it cost me twice as much going to the North and Đà Nẵng is the halfway point.

Don't take the bus since there's been numerous stories of bus drivers dozing off at the wheel and sending their coach down a ravine.

I'm sure there are shuttles (vans) as well but the shuttle drivers only care about speed and probably get you there faster.  They are likely to not have seat-belts and the fare is higher.

I agree on train and bus to 100%.

Train should be the option.
Bus could be priced a bit less, you might have to change once or even twice, however the tour can easy end in hell

Flight tickets can be pretty affordable if you purchase in advance. 1.1 mil VND is standard. Vietnam airlines has 8 flights/day i think. These things are easily verified on their website.

Contrary to what others say, bus is a very decent option, if you go with reputable companies. Phuong Trang (Futa bus lines) is one of them. Nice coaches, polite staff, good safety record.

Travelling to Danang from HCMC, you can go:
By bus: cheap, were sightseeing along the way, but it take you much more time
By train: comfortable, were not sightseeing
By plane: ok, high price, about 3.700.000vnd/pax/return

I am a local and i would like to vote for railway as the cheapest and safest way to travel to Da Nang. Go to Ga Saigon (Saigon railway station) located at 1 Nguyen Thong street,ward 9, Dist 3, HCMC to check the schedule and buy a ticket in advance

Sometimes buses tend to see how many passengers they can pickup.  Makes for a slow and overcrowded trip.  Travel by train has many options: hard seat, soft seat, hard sleeper and soft sleeper. If you book online early enough you may fly for the cost of a soft sleeper.  1 hour flying is my prefered method of travel. Short trips are nice by hard seat train.  Gives you the vietnamese experience if money is a concern.

Went by train in the end.
On te advice of a Viet Friend i oped for the hard seat option in the end as it is the cheapest, at about 300K VND, then as advised requestd the soft seat option at an extra 150K from the guard on the train, so total cost was 450K, as opposed to 600K that they wanted in the station. Though the seats are soft they are still very uncomfortable to sleep on, as the journney is 19 hours long on a very noisy, bumby ride.  I flew back to Ho Chi Minh at the end of my stay.

Learning to grease the wheels already.  You do realize the "guard" (conductor) just pockets that money right?  They do that alot.  I even had one conductor tell me not to buy a ticket from the official station and just call him when I need a ride.  He'll just escort me on the train and find me an open seat.  I wasn't comfortable with that so when I did go on my return trip, the SAME conductor happened to be on the train and he didn't look too happy he missed out on an easy fleece.

Hello; do you know if I can travel with my pet dog ~ (8 kilos well train, quiet & timid) on the train from hcmc to Da Nang?

haha, good question. If it's in the "box" for sure but outside, I am not sure what might happen, after he raised a leg.
