Considering Antigua

floridaman19

Hello folks - Scott:

My wife and I have been considering Antigua as a escape route as America becomes more divided and violent.  We have has the good fortune to become friends with an Antiguan national who emigrated to the states, all I can say is if Donny is representative of the Antiguan people, show me where to sign up!

Not to mention the fact that Antiguans are 96 plus percent Christian and a literacy rate of 98 percent.

Donny still has family on the island with whom he says that he would get us in touch with in the event that make the move.  After the holidays I plan to get in touch with an agent as we have questions and apparently Antiguan government officials are not allowed (?) to answer them.

Principally, we wonder if we can bring our pet birds.

I don't see any other downsides to this possible move; Antigua has a stable currency, laws that are enforced and beauty that could be best described as heavenly.

Any thoughts that you would care to share would be greatly appreciated!

Warm regards - Scott

Hi Scott,

I don't understand your point: "After the holidays I plan to get in touch with an agent as we have questions and apparently Antiguan government officials are not allowed (?) to answer them."

Of course the government' civil servants are allowed to answer questions. The only problem is finding one to talk to, and the best way is always in person since you won't get any answers by email, and it's just as difficult to reach people by phone.

As for the birds, that's quite unusual! We've helped people bring dogs or cats, but not birds yet ;-)

We're close to government veterinarians, so I could look into it for you.

Otherwise, I've just started a blog about life in Antigua (3 posts for now but more coming). With the aim of being objective (because there are good things but also disadvantages to setlle in Antigua). Feel free to check it out (I don't know if I am allowed to put the link here, but it's easy enough to find the .com and then the blog with  my signature). You can contact me by private message or through our website.

Best regards,

Erika & Jerome

Good morning and thank you for your response!

My wife phoned an individual within the Antiguan Department of Agriculture (I believe it was).  When my wife posed the question this individual informed her that she was not able to answer the question and that we should speak with our immigration/CBI agent who would be able to answer our question.

If you can conveniently get information regarding bringing our pet birds ( one Congo African Gray Parrot, one medium Sulfur Crested Cockatoo and one standard gray Cockatiel) I would be most grateful smile.png

Our avian vet here informs that typically a certificate of health that is dated less than two weeks prior to arrival is generally sufficient for most countries.

We would be planning on going the CBI route with a property purchase in the $1M area and ultimately expatriating the U.S.

Thank you again for your help.
