Everyday life in Belize
You Must be either stupid, hopelessly optomistic or selling something. You could not be any other category as DrAl the self appointed High priest of the "No one should move to Belize cult."
Yes sometimes he has some truth in some of his posts but rarely is it in any way on the positive side.
He keeps telling聽 new posters that they would be better off retiring to a place he prefers, as it fits his 'I should get everything given to me on a plate聽 as soon as I want it lifestyle'.
What will he do when all the posters he likes to label 'Stupid' for not interpreting his facts in the same way he does, as unrelenting doom and gloom, leave this聽 blog forum.
Will all new posters be treated to his juandiced view with no balance for the lifestyle available in Belize.

Please don,t leave. This is just a blog聽 not a gospel. Any body can post almost anything, some truthful ,some half truth and some exaggerated. People who read have to come to their own judgement. So please stay on the blog and write when you can and post

Why we never heard any postive feedback from you about Belize. Every time l read your blog,聽 seems like you had a bad experience in Belize. Stop comparing your life from where you came from, in Belize.
As far as SB goes, the聽 best I can do is warn everyone, and tell everyone,聽 Be darned careful and do proper research before investing.聽 Even if you take the tour,聽 PLEASE, Be Cautious and Be Careful!!!!!!!!!!!
This is my first post upon this site.聽 I hope聽 I am not banned by it.聽
Belize is a beautiful country and she as well as her people have so much to offer!聽 Do your research and know what you are getting into when investing and building a life in Belize.聽 Please.聽 Make many trips to Belize, during different times of the year, as to know if the land you plan to purchase is more flooded out during the rainy season and also know what it is like during the dry season.聽 Please, educate yourselves and know what you are getting into.聽
There are so many good posters that I see upon this forum who have lives lived and grown here.聽 Listen to all of them, visit and decide for your self.聽
Do not buy in to some piped dream.
Take care everyone and have a good evening!
Is Belize still customes聽 friendly? Most of the Caribbean is not, unless you have a ton of money. How is San Pedro? I'd love to get some advice from people who have lived there.

Thanks

What or where is SB? And why the warnings?
Thanks.

There are really wonderful communities in Belize, and I'm sure you'll be welcomed wherever you choose.
I just wanted you to know we are happy in Belize. English is spoken here and that takes a pressure off of us in a already stressful world.

Looks like I have alot to read.....But most enjoyable I must say!
thanx again for your post

I live in New York and am researching as well. I've never even been to Belize. I think I want to go within the next 6- months to visit the different areas, etc. I've always had a car, but I kind of like the idea of NOT having one and being able to walk or bike places easily. Apparently public transportation is readily available.
Have you visited there at all? I am looking to find a place to rent for聽 a couple of weeks unless it seems better to stay 1 week in one location, 1 week in another. I don't know if the places advertised on-line are ok, clean and of my reservation will be a sure thing when I actually arrive there. The places advertised on-line are through realtors and they seem pretty costly. If you or anyone else here has any suggestions, I would appreciate them.
Thanks and happy hunting!
I too have never been....but it's so damn appealing to me! sounds like you and I are in the same boat so to speak...
so I will keep you in my radar......and hope to touch base with you along the way.
Just clicking on any topics in this blog is a huge learning experience! You come across the few that absolutely hate every single thing (must be type A personality) he he he ...so I think we need to take everything with a grain of salt...I too am planning to go soon...
So cheers to both of us finding our dream...

I am doing the same thing, even though she answered you.聽 It sounds like lots of rain forest....unspoiled and not crowded. I'm going to examine a couple of different places. I am not looking for an American style suburb. Been there, done.... I've gone on some mission trips to Central America and Africa. I was doing a start-up in my not-for-profit for ten weeks last year in Kenya. I really want to sell most everything here and start over, much lighter and less encumbered by stuff and WINTER clothes, heavy coats, scarves, boots, mittens, etc. North Eastern woman here. Enough, awready!
If I find any interesting web sites I'll let you know.

Any suggestions? Thanks, Madeline2
Your response was exactly the kind of non-biased experiential based comment I have been looking for. I appreciate your candor and how you gave a certain balance in helping me to understand what I have to look forward to once I have my home completed.
I do have to ask tho, the critters that you referenced (toads, frogs, snakes, scorpions, etc) Were they as common visitors still once your聽 home was completed?

Yes, we dio have snakes in Belize, some of them venemous, but as long as you keep your grass cut, they are not going to be a problem. In my work as a realtor, I walk through long grass and jungle but have never encountered a snake. I see them occasionally crossing the road.
I assure you that you have nothing to worry about in this regard.

Life in Belize is relatively simple and beuracracy-free.
billdoesbelize wrote:Agreed jacott unless you actually have to accomplish something. If the simplest task can be accomplished in less than three visits then you are a winner. Not complaining, just saying.
Agreed Bill. A current example is opening a Bank account. I think i posted my experience in another thread, but here is an update on my experience.
Did my due diligence on line, had all required original letters, references, forms etcetera when I walked into Atlantic Bank in Placencia. The nice young lady at the Domestic branch desk looked them over and said all was in order, but needed to send them into headquarters in Belize City. She said it would be about two weeks.I said ok.
Three weeks later I stopped by and was told not yet, they would contact me when they heard. So, weekly I stopped by and was told the same thing. about eight weeks after my first visit, she told me that she had heard back a few days prior and was sorry they had declined my request to open an account.
When I asked why, she said even though I owned property, it was because I was not a resident. ????? I replied, well we both knew I was not a resident when I first applied.聽
聽 I then asked for all my paperwork back. She went to the file cabinet and pulled my paperwork out and gave it to me.
I walked over to the desk of the International Branch of Atlantic Bank a few feet away, I talked to the Manager there, gave him the paperwork I had just recovered. He said it looked fine, and he needed to send it to Belize City, and it would take two to three weeks.
I thanked him. about six weeks later just before I returned to Texas I stopped by again to inquire, I was told not yet.,聽 told him I was close to going back and he said fine It would be OK, and they would email me when he got the OK just come back in on my next trip in country.
About a month after I got back to Texas, I received emails both from Belize City and the Placencia Manager saying I was approved, and welcoming me to Atlantic Bank International.
I will be returning soon, It will be interesting to see if I am still approved when I go to fund the account this trip.
聽 I expect the new Atlantic Bank International building is completed by now.
It is/was being built directly across the street from the Atlantic Bank Domestic branch.
A few months ago the manager of ABL in San Ignacio, where i live聽 informed me that he would no longer be able to open accounts for my real estate clients.
This is just one more regulation forced onto Belize banks by the American Treasury in an attempt to control money laundering. The ironic thing is, both myself and my assistant opened US dollar accounts in Houston in a few days by email.
The only alternative is to do what "Will the Old" did and open an account in an International bank. These are in effect, off-shore banks and the currency involved is US dollars. Atlantic Bank Ltd. and Atlantoc Bank International do work closely together and this would be the bank that i woild recommend.
I have no sympathjy for tax cheats but I don't see how forbidding non-Belizeans to open a Belize dollar account in a local bank, and forcing them to put their money in an off-shore account, is going to solve their problem.

Ahhh, my type of living. Thus, my name...sloputtputt, I聽 take life slow and easy.
jacott wrote:This has been a grey area for a long time. Many banks in Belize would not open accounts for non-residents for over a year - except Atlantic Bank Ltd.

I am pretty sure that all Belize domestic banks will accept US Dollars for deposits, but all withdrawals is in BZD for anyone. Apparently trying to spend BZD outside of Belize is an exercise in futility, and has been that way for years. So anyone actually laundering money, would have difficulty using a Belize bank.
As far as the American Treasury being the main reason for the difficulties, I have my doubts. I think it is an over reaction by the Belize banks. I say this because early this year (it might have been late 2015) PM Dean Barrow was in the US and had face to face meetings with US banking/Treasury officials to discuss the problems. He was quoted as saying they told him they were pleased with the way Belize and Belize banks were operating. The US officials also publicly stated the same thing. Stories about this were in both US papers as well as Belize media.I am sure one can still Google the stories. The prohibiting of non-residents opening a domestic account happened some months after this meeting.

I totally agree.聽 The only reason I wanted a domestic account even though I could not withdraw US dollars, was to be able to pay my bills with online banking, write a few checks, and use a local debit card.
I can not do any of those with the Atlantic Bank International account. All I will be able to do, is put US dollars in directly, or by wire transfer. They will charge a fee when I deposit, or withdraw my money in US dollars or BZD.
About the only benefit I get, is not having cash around the house, and they do pay just over 2% interest. I think the fees they charge will be a little less than using my US debit card at one of their ATMs.
Bill's comment "Agreed jacott unless you actually have to accomplish something." Is spot on聽
Please don't get me wrong, I love the life in Belize and the wonderful folks here, but I just want new folks reading here to have realistic expectations.聽
