I've done it many times.聽 I actually prefer to bring my things in my luggage because of the varieties of choices in the states.聽 Things are much cheaper or Amazon.com, than the stores in D.R lol.聽 I say go for it.
It depends. They have some items here for reasonable prices. You can buy some items in your home country and bring here. I personally have brought 3 flat screen tvs and and luxury cooling bed sheets. Tvs are really expensive here for some reason. I usually go to home depot and buy one those plastic tuff bins. Also, I do not know how you travel but I usually buy a one ticket economy to America. Then on the way back to RD I do first class because it includes two free check bags which is the same cost of paying the baggage fee so there is some cost savings there.
Hello, my family聽 and I are looking to do the same. We are US citizens. We are looking to invest/retire there possibly in the next few years. Could you recommend a realtor in that area? . We have been in touch with one but I do like to deal with people who have had good experiences already.聽
Thanks

Hi Jeff! I suggest reaching out to the OP directly or starting a new thread for a realtor recommendation. This thread is about importing items to the DR.

If you are coming anyway then fill up your suitcases with the expensive stuff - electronics phones security systems聽 or whatever is important to you. Most things are readily available here now.聽 And some things are made for here!聽

If you are moving here and getting residencia then use the exemptions you get when shipping.
A big part of the decision to bring things or buys things depends on where in DR you will be. We're in Las Terrenas and the shopping options here are minimal! The things you can find here are sold at a premium! Just a small example - I bought a cheap, plastic pill cutter at the pharmacy here in town yesterday. The same thing you could buy at Target for $3-4 was almost $10 here! Unfortunately, I had to have it!

If you are getting your residency, which you should do if you are planning to live here, then you can bring in a container of personal household items duty-free. We brought in the household items and our car. We now wish we had brought more stuff with us! Each trip we take back to the US, we take empty suitcases that we fill with Amazon purchases!

And with a business class ticket on American, the two free checked bags can be up to 70 pounds each! We always maximize it!
Thanks
thanks for the info聽 we will be moving in Jan
which company didyou use to move big items etc?
THANKS
THE TUFF BINS WILL HOLD HOW BIG OF FLAT SCREEN AND AMERICAN TAKES THE BIN?? THANKS
Try Curt Erickson,聽 1 829-539-3963, DR Properties.聽 Covers the north coast, mainly Puerta Plata to Cabarete, including Sosua.聽 Very good to work with!
RINA PADILLA LOOK HER UP ON WHATS UP TELL HER DINO SAID HELLO SHE IS REAL NICE GOOD ENGLISH BEEN GOING TO DR FOR OVER 20 YEARS JUST NOW BOUGHT CANT TAKE THE USA MUCH LONGER GOOD LUCK
do you know of taking 75" TVs import cost? or would it be better include them in a pod with appliances? i was quoted 3k for a pod from Co that we use to shop 30" cube door to door 100$
THANK YOU!!!
I brought that whole checklist she stated with me lol yeah I flew in in December and then also came back and May and I've been bringing cameras Wi-Fi anything electronic with me on my second suitcase every time. The problem with cabarete is you have to travel to get to any stores that actually sell anything that is good but also that is inexpensive. You have to travel to Puerto Plata usually to get anything really wanted to put in your condo. Trust me the best way is to bring it with you. I wish you the best luck cabarete is amazing you're going to have an amazing time there. I've been coming since 1997 and spend a lot of time here usually 6 months at a time
i would like to find out where i get the info on exceptionswhen moving
thanks
DR website?
It's part of the residency process and benefits.聽 Let me see if I can find something.
No.If it is a new TV leave in the TV box.The airline will put in the fragile section.I use the tuff bins for other householders items I purchased.
Thanks for the tip.I to have been coming here for years .i usually fly into santo damingo. i love the drive .and pic up stuff along the way.One person said they fit a flat screen in a tuff tote ? Tv s are to expensive here. if they do stop me whats worse case pay duty on item?? thanks to everone for the HELP inside joke with caps lol
So i just check it in like a piece of luggage?
Check with your airline on the maximum dimensions allowed for checked bags to see if a large TV can fly. You might have to pay if it's oversized.

Here are two links to the information on the exoneration of import duty with residency.
I just looked at the American Airlines聽 website it said in small print no boxes or plastic tubs.Tv comes in a box and a tough bin is plastic .Has anyone had problems with tv s or tuff bins ?? Thanks for all the help
Cabarete is not that far from Puerto Plata. If you go to POP there is a Jumbo and a La Sirena. You can stock up on groceries and check out small appliances and home goods.聽

And there are lots of small independent shops between Cab and POP.
yes but tv are crazy money i hear no problem from people but on the website of American i see only 62 inch total measurements . Im a little concerned ? Thank you
Hi Planner!

Is there a limit as to how much you can bring in your suitcase? I can bring 3 bags at 70lbs each but was wondering about customs. I鈥檝e read $100usd, $200usd and saw on a website 鈥済ifts鈥 no more than $500usd. Called the consulate here in Toronto and they didn鈥檛 know.
As I understand it you can bring up to US 500 as gifts.
Hi
Our carrier told me that they an take a 65 " but he charges 10 per inch, a bit steep but might bite the bullet and take one as i like to watch my movies and sports in a large TV lol.
taking about sports, are there any pkgs that offer US Football etc?
thanks
I just saw a Samsung 62 inch for 600 at Best buys.
one can not buy that same TV in DR not even for 1000 bucks
$10.inch sounds right

That's how they do it.. by the inch
Includes all bribes at the dock
@TravellingFairies - see this website for rules about what is allowed in with baggage:

Thanks for the info, I noticed$500 for gifts, gifts for whom? Lol I wonder if I can bring gifts for myself!
I have household items suck as linens, kitchen items. No TVs
Gifts for me? Lol
We bring in suitcases stuffed to the gills with products for personal use every time we fly back to DR! We've always just been waived through at Aduanas and have never been questioned.

I think as long as you don't have multiples of high-ticket items that would be easy to sell here, you'll be okay! I might have 12 of my favorite deodorant, but they aren't concerned with me trying to sell those here.
Of聽 course gifts for you.聽 Personal use items聽 are fine up to the聽 US聽 500.聽 Many聽 people bring more and get away with it. Happens all the time.聽 IF you are stopped and questioned聽 just say its for you.

That said take things out of their boxes!聽 聽use them once and pack em up!聽 聽Things like deoderant聽 your makeup etc聽 no one cares. BUT聽 phones, electronics etc,聽 they care.

Another tip聽 聽- using a聽 porter at the airport is highly beneficial! They can often walk you right through easily and quickly.聽 Well worth the tip!
Sorry another question, what about tool? My husband wanted to bring some so that we would have a starter kit.
Same applies
I use a different plan.

I buy my things and ship to a mudanza in NYC.
Usually free shipping - Amazon, etc

The mudanza then packs them up and ships to me in Cabrera - door to door
Thta's what mudanzas do.
Taxes are 'all-in'.... pay COD

Have shipped lawn mowers, BBqs, you name it... furniture too

For personal belongings - I box them and ship them to the mudanza myself.

Plenty of them in MIA or NYC
NYC shipping time is 2-3 weeks.... never do it In Nov/Dec.... too busy

Nyc is my preference Awlida.... Jesus Parra....
Use my name - I have sent many people to him over the years
Willie when was the last time you shipped?聽 聽Have you recently shipped electronics?聽 And anything that was not considered household goods?
'not considered household goods'..... like what ?

Yes, I have shipped TV's... standard price per inch - flat rate
Fridges , stoves, washing machines

Last shipment?
Maybe 2 in the last year
I am a regular customer
