And just to keep the language correct, it is not a Visa. It鈥檚 an extension of the 30 day visitor/tourist card that is included with your flight to DR.

This is actually important that we keep the use of terms correct. Good point!聽 聽

The tourist card is just that. The EXTENSION is an administrative workaround and is not a visa.聽 For now, this works聽 just fine.

For what it鈥檚 worth, and this is not the 鈥渓egal鈥 way, but if you are just coming and going you can do nothing and pay the fine when you leave.聽 I started the visa renewing Leicestershire once and it seemed onerous and no cheaper than just paying the fine, which takes a couple of minutes at the airport. It appears to have literally no repercussions when you come back.聽
You are correct, at the moment.聽 聽The advantage to using the online portal may become apparent in the future. We just do not know what this gov't is planning.
@planner...Government planning...that's funny...1f923.svg1f923.svg1f923.svg

@Jwoddis

聽 聽 聽 I read somewhere that when you apply for the extension , that they will give
to you but you still have to pay for the days you stayed past the 30 day mark , same
amount $$$
聽 聽 So no one should think they鈥檙e staying in country free of penalty with or without
The blessings of the government
Correct.

But the real benefit of the 'Staying Extension' is that it is an extension of stay to your tourist card legal stay and you maintain legality, as the process complies with what is written in the Immigration Law and it's regulations and is signed off by the head of immigration( Decree 631-11 Article 83).

That may not mean much to many when the illegal overstay is not policed at present, but the big bonus is 'by maintaining your legal stay you can continue to drive on a foreign license and because your license is valid you have insurance cover'.

MITUR confirms what is written in the Transit Law 63-17 and it's regulations on their tourist website:

IS MY DRIVER鈥橲 LICENSE VALID IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC?
Yes it is valid, but only for the duration of your legal stay鈥搃.e. your 30-day tourist card or visa term.

For clarity there are some expats who believe that the 55 year old law 241 -67 issued before the immigration law allows use of the foreign license for 90 days. not so because the new transit law 63-17 found it inadequate and replaces it.

Dominicana.

The 'Staying Extension' has this huge benefit for anyone who does not want to risk driving illegally without valid insurance and run the risk of sever consequences in the event of a serious accident.
