Sports in Austria

Hello everyone,

The Olympic Games are now just a few days away and we would like to talk about sports.

What sports are the most popular and/or unusual in Austria?

Are sports facilities easily accessible there? Where and how can one find sports clubs in the region?

Are there sports events regularly held in the country?

And you? What is your favourite sport? Which one(s) do you practice in Austria?

The seasons dictate what sports are popular when. Of course football is highly popular, but the season is suspended end of November until March because of the risk of snow. Nordic walking and trekking are popular in the mountains, canyoning and wild water rafting. Paragliding. Mountain biking. And of course inevitably skiing. Most Austrian kids are thrust onto the boards by their parents before they are 5. Snowboarding. Wind surfing on lakes. Climbing, freestyle or traditional. Swimming, but only have small but magnificent pools, I think there is less than a handful Olympic length pools here. Lidos are in abundance due to the stable and warm summers. Light athletics to a point.
