How big is your company? If it's not some high-powered multinational it's usually most cost-effective to do your own bookkeeping. There are loads of desktop and web accounting apps. You might still want a professional to help you with annual/quarterly tax submissions or filing of annual accounts, but that's a fairly trivial exercise if your online accounts are always up to date.

I'm a cheapskate so I use the free tier of Zoho, which, for the money, is surprisingly good. :-) However, if you go with a Bulgarian service provider they'll probably suggest you go with product X that they're already using. My attorney runs a separate company bookkeeping service and that's how they do it for most clients (please PM me if you want his contact info).

Had to start a company in order to buy a house here, so unfortunately not a multinational 馃檪

Thank you gwynj for the info on self-bookkeeping, I will look into that, much appreciated! 馃馃憤

If it's only for that, you don't have to make company returns if there is zero turnover; the law changed a few years ago.

聽 Thank you JimJ, that's good news for me, will keep that in mind.

The property-owning company is a common device here as it's required by all non-EU citizens wanting to own a house with some land. Typically, these are non-trading entities as they merely hold the asset (or assets, if you have several houses or include vehicles too).

If you want to undertake business activity (i.e. trade in some way), I recommend you incorporate a separate company rather than mixing the two. But, of course, the trading company must file a return, so including its assets is not a big stretch (if you prefer to mix).

The company does have expenses such as property tax, garbage fees, electricity, water, etc. However, I'd guess most folks don't bother to do formal bookkeeping/accounting to keep track (and try, where possible, to put these bills in their personal name as this can be cheaper than the commercial/business rate).

Income from the property (e.g. rent) would count as trading, but otherwise it's dormant / non-trading, and it simply owns an asset.

@JimJ is correct that accounting is much simplified for dormant / non-trading companies, but I'm not sure that you don't have to file ANY returns. My understanding is that you should file for the FIRST accounting period of dormancy, but thereafter you are exempt.

This is covered by the Bulgaria Accounting Act (Article 38, paragraph 9) which mandates that companies without business activity during a reporting period must submit a one-time declaration of inactivity to the Commercial Register.

I'm not sure it's super difficult to do yourself, as you can file online.

They have a bunch of documents and declarations.

This one is Article 38 para 9 accounting act (i.e. dormant)
