Glozhene monastery is an interesting place: those who have lived in Bulgaria for some time (and can read the media reports) will recall that one former Abbot was arrested for fraud, Vandalism/Hooliganism, arson at the monastery (twice), illegal possession of firearms, and discharging a pistol during a drunken argument with visitors to the monastery. He had a聽 luxury car, the origin of which he was unwilling to explain. The origin turned out to be immaterial, as he set fire to said vehicle during the same drunken argument. He ended up in prison and was defrocked.

There is evidently a specific job description and skillset needed for such positions. A number of years later, the replacement abbot, Archimandrite Eftimi, was also arrested, again for various demonstrable frauds, misbehaviour in official office, illegal possession of firearms (he was clearly a cleric who was both well-connected and in great need.of security as his cache of weaponry included several machine guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition). He somehow managed to buy a new top of the range Mercedes; clearly he is a man of great taste and discernment - he didn't torch the vehicle but instead had a penchant for driving it around the local roads while firing his arsenal out of the window. The court case dragged on for years but, as so often, never actually concluded; his current whereabouts is unknown but it isn't at Glozhene...馃槑

In case you're wondering, yes there is a "Church Mafia" here, despite the resident Doubting Thomases: a good friend of ours was a priest in one Black Sea area. He somehow acquired a series of high-end Mercs, a very fancy seaside apartment (equipped with a blonde, surgically-enhanced bimbo; his wife and daughter lived in an enviable townhouse elsewhere), and a taste for expensive restaurants and stratospherically-priced booze. The last two were his undoing: excess weight and severe cirrhosis proved to be a very bad combination. I do miss him - he was a very urbane fellow and a great raconteur, albeit close-lipped about the exact scope and nature of his ancillary "business interests"...馃榿
