Thinking of moving to Bulgaria by jeanmandredeix
Hi. We are a retired couple with a dog that are considering moving to Bulgaria for a better life than the UK. I am doing research currently on areas and certainly don鈥檛 want Sunny Beach but I do like the more southern areas but note that the ...
Jean, our village is the same. Only one harmless roaming dog (owned, but she let it roam) when I first came. Now it seems every day there are more loose dogs, and they are forming a pack. I'm concerned for the safety of our outside cats.My neighbour ... Read More
Hey, I must be rich! by JimJ
According to this property puff piece in one of today's newspapers, 'Er Indoors and Yours Truly are now officially members of the BG plutocracy! 馃帺Signed photographs of us throwing brioches and Maundy money to the adoring multitude will ...
It reads very like advertising puff from a property developer trying to flog overpriced houses. But anyway, congratulations. Throw some brioche my way, please, your lordship. Read More

So, the time has come to renew my 5 year, EU, pre Brexit, residency card and obtain a 10 year permanent residency one.... Well, that's what I thought, but bureaucracy in Bulgaria reigns...I received my existing card in October 2020, but the expiry ...

Cabled internet not WIFI by digitalnomad1
Hi i'm looking to rent in Bulgaria for 6 months initially, i may buy accommodation after that. I work online and need very reliable internet connection, WIFI is not good enough, and wonder how easy is it to get fibre or cable TV type lined internet ...
I agree completely that most sites' search engines are very poor at filtering out unsuitable listings, often because those listings are paying extra. As Jim said, don't consider buying without spending some time in Bulgaria first. It's very Marmite. ... Read More

Steve, sorry I didn't see this sooner. I hope you found the Toshevo office! It's not easy to locate, tucked away on a side street right on the edge of town. If you need directions, let me know. Also, if you don't speak Bulgarian, try to take a ... Read More
First time buying by seanskey
I'm considering buying in the next few weeks, any advice would be great, thanks
It really depends what you are looking for and what your budget is. The properties to look for will be different, the places to look will be different. Village house, apartment in town, beach resort, mountain resort? How much renovation work are you ... Read More

Do you have any specific questions, Sean? "Any advice" covers a lot of territory! What @SimCityAT said is all correct. As a Scot, you will need to set up a Bulgarian company to buy any property apart from an apartment with no share of the land. Most ... Read More
There's a turn up for the books! by JimJ
The new prices of tickets on Sofia's public transport networks have been announced ahead of Euro Day on January 1st. Amazingly, they're all going DOWN! Admittedly, not by much but it's certainly a good start...
Some of the prices of buses in our region are going down. The 3 BGN fare will become 1.50 EUR, for example, and the 8 BGN fare will be 4 EUR. I'm not sure yet what will happen with our 2.50 BGN village bus fare, which coverts to 1.28 EUR. My guess ... Read More

It's a shame the article doesn't link back to the original research or include the map they refer to!We ended up where we are by chance, not choice, but it's turned out well for us. We visited Bulgaria multiple times from 2012 to 2018, staying in ... Read More

Has food cost increaed massively? by jeanmandredeix
Is it me or has food costs increased over past few months? I monitored my food costs on our last 6 week visit and we have only been here two weeks so far and they seem a hell of a lot higher.
Prices have definitely risen sharply in Bulgaria, but this isn't recent. Shopping around can help reduce the cost -- fruit and veg at the Friday market doesn't have the same range as the supermarket but is far cheaper. I do hope prices stabilise, ... Read More
Almost 20,000 people lost their lives on EU roads in 2024. by SimCityAT
Almost 20,000 people lost their lives on EU roads in 2024.Today, on the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, we say: every victim is one too many.
Sadly, it does support the unsafe driving comments often raised here -- only Romania has a higher road death rate. For comparison, the UK rate is 25. Read More

I didn't see it as showing off. Chances are you won't lose money on it. And even if you did, you need to factor in the value of your time and Zlati's time and wellbeing. It's probably worth losing a few k to avoid years of annual frustration dealing ... Read More
