Possible Useful Info For Renovators

JimJ

I'm currently (still!) in the throes of an apartment renovation and I'm working on the electrics at the moment. When I say "I'm working" I actually mean that - due to my arthritic hands and knees no longer being too good at holding small tools, working in tiny spaces or climbing stepladders - I'm planning and specifying what I want the Sparky and builder to do.

I've sourced the cables from the UK (cheaper and a LOT easier to pull through/plaster in, and EC approved when you sleeve the ends of the earth leads. The installation will provide the kind of electrical safety that's mandatory in the UK but rare here in BG, unless it's a really top-end project (as far as I'm concerned, electrical safety in any house should be top-end).

A rather nice (and fairly inexpensive if you buy from the importers) range of switches, sockets etc caught our eye and we'll be using those. The design is very sleek but the best parts are that they're modular and include UK three-pin sockets, as well as "multifunctional" ones that take a multitude of other types of plug*. So you can install a Schuko (EU) and UK/multifunctional socket in the same wall box.

It might not sound too interesting to everyone but I'm quite excited....I think I may need to get out more!

*Obviously, being a socket they don't include  any voltage adjustment etc, so don't plug any US appliances into them unless you enjoy the aroma of melted plastic...😎

LOL, Jim! We get our excitement wherever we can at our more mature ages!

Glad the renovation is progressing well. Getting the electrics in our house completed is the next item on my list come spring, but our needs are probably somewhat simpler. Finding a proper electrician is the tricky part. There are plenty of guys who think they can do electrical stuff. Not quite the same thing.
