Are you prepared to pay the going rates for the skilled and reputable tradesmen that you're looking for? Finding sparkies with real paper qualifications here in BG is next to impossible, but if your house catches fire due to an electrical fault that will be the first Get Out Of Jail Free card the insurance company will play..

Most of the real pros here are no longer here - they can get much better pay elsewhere. By and large, the best you can hope for is to find someone who isn't a totally cloeless bodger, and even then it pays to be on-site all the time keeping an eye on him.

Good luck in your search - and, as Jane says, do specify the area you're looking to get the work done in. Do also be aware that recommendations of tradesmen are only as good as the perceptions of the person doing the recommendation: some people have low standards/don't know what a good job looks like/have given up expecting "miracles" etc. And never forget that there's basically NO come-back if you're ripped off by some cowboy..

For electrical and plumbing work in Bulgaria, I would first define the scope very clearly before contacting contractors.

Useful preparation:

- photos of the existing installation

- exact list of works required

- location of the property

- whether it is repair, renovation or full replacement

- whether drawings or permits are needed

- whether you need English-speaking coordination on site

For foreign owners, the biggest challenge is often not finding 鈥渟omeone鈥�, but controlling quality, scope and communication.

If you are not in Bulgaria full-time, having someone local check the situation and coordinate the work can save a lot of problems later.
