Visa photo question

ClairNotHolt

Anyone had any luck with visa photos taken yourself (like with a phone camera or a usual camera), not in a photo studio? I'm applying online and have read it's possible to use a DIY photo. Any tips or warnings?

Hell ClairNotHolt,

Welcome to ´ó¿§¸£ÀûÓ°Ôº 😀

That is a very interesting question you have asked.

I really hope someone who has done this before will be able to share their insights with you and other members, because I am sure you are not the only one looking for tips on this specific topic.

Cheers,

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

The UK Government website has a very useful guide for passport photos; this will take you straight to it.

I hope this helps.

As long as you follow all the rules and requirements (looking straight into camera, the background is plain white, camera at the eye level, etc) you'll be fine. You can use apps or programs for cropping ID photos, something like Passport Photo maker or similar stuff, they usually have templates for countries and documents so you won't have to work on sizings yourself.

I'd really suggest asking someone to take the picture as even with a tripod it could be tricky, you don't really see the level of your camera. However, doing the photo yourself you get as many retakes as you want.

I 2nd that, get someone to take the photo for you. It's a pain in the butt to do it yourself.

I gave up in the end and went to a shop, as I needed a digital copy as well as actual pictures for a residency card.

Absolutely! The process itself wasn't long at all, I think I spent more time taking the photo than waiting for everything to be approved, but I didn't mind as long as I knew I was getting a photo that wouldn't look like a mugshot 🤣
